Thorndale Voters Reject $995,000 School Bond Issue

Thorndale residents voted down a 995000 bond proposal to finance a new elementary school band hall and gym at the Thorndale School site. The measure failed 199 to 321 with estimated costs around 450000 for the school and about 530000 for the gym and bond hall under one roof.

13 County Families In Heritage Program

Texas Agriculture Commissioner John C. White announced 13 Milam County families are registered in the Texas Family Land Heritage Program as the third year of registration begins May 1. Since 1974 nearly 950 families have been recognized for 100 years or more of continuous, productive operation highlighting Texas agricultural heritage.

Runoff Election Tight in Precinct 2 Constable Race

Griss Wells defeated incumbent Rex Jones 90 to 85 in the closest runoff Saturday for Precinct 2 constable. Milam County Commissioner Adolph Gresak won re election 305 to 256 over Evelyn Abel. Maurice Lowrey won Precinct 1 constable 397 to 354 over H T Tommy Chamberlain. Jon Newton beat Jerry Sadler 1 285 to 718 for Railroad Commissioners and W T Phillips won CrimA Appeals 1061 to 840 for Carl Dally.

Milam County Heart Association Names Board Members

Thirteen area residents were named to the Board of Directors of the Milam County Chapter of the American Heart Association. Folk Fete Opens Here

The seventh annual Folk Fete festival opens Thursday night at 7 30 with a queen contest at Methodist Fellowship Hall and continues Friday at the National Guard Armory with booths by 22 artists at 10 30. A weekend of food music dance and contests includes races Saturday parade chili cookoff and a dunking pool.

Solons Urge Funding For Elm Creek Project

Sen. Lloyd Bentsen and Rep. W R Poage urge Congress to authorize 6.67 million for the Elm Creek Watershed in Bell Falls McLennan and Milam counties in Texas. The plan by the Soil Conservation Service would cost 4.2 million federally with a benefit cost ratio of 1.9 to 1 and aims to curb flooding and erosion while enabling roads and landfills.

Rosebud Dam breach urged to lower lake level

Texas Water Development Board engineers urge lowering Rosebud Lake by several feet to prevent failure of the 1909 earthen dam amid cracking since last September. Officials say substantial rainfall could cause a breach, but the water treatment plant would not be destroyed. A temporary plan to provide water via a Brazos River pipeline remains in place.

Pfannstiel Named Director of Texas Extension Service

Dr. Daniel C. Pfannstiel has been named director of the Texas Agricultural Extension Service, part of the Texas A&M University System. The appointment, approved by the System Board of Regents and pending U S Department of Agriculture concurrence, becomes effective June 1.
