The newspaper invites help to locate material on Milam County from the 1700s to the 1900s for a Bicentennial edition planned for July. editors aim to cover Central Texas history from Spanish settlement around 1740 and early northern migrations, pre dating the Texas Revolution.
A community Bicentennial worship service is planned for July 4 at 8 p.m. in Yee High stadium with participation from the National Guard American Legion Veterans of Foreign Wars Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts. Chaplain Kenneth Thompson of Carswell Air Force Base will speak. Community choir practice is scheduled June 2 and 27 at 3 p.m. at First Baptist Church to form a 150 member choir. GED tests are set for June 5 and 12 at Yee High School with a $10 full test or $2 per section, administered by Jack Ruzicka.
The LBJ Library in Austin hosted a premiere of Presidential China spanning 200 years of White House administrations. Lady Bird Johnson attended with Friends of LBJ Library, while other presidential libraries gave presentations. The display, along with advanced tech, highlights Lyndon Johnson's papers and era.
At a Monday meeting Milam County officials and funeral home directors discussed a potential special tax to fund ambulance service in Precincts 1 and 2 after June 15. They estimated annual costs of 50 000 to 90 000 and noted other towns could assist during transitions. They favored letting voters decide the need for ambulances.
The 7th annual Folk Fete approaches with Mrs. Betty Reineke leading planning for a three day program at the armory. New attractions join favorites as events include a Queen contest in the Methodist hall, arts and crafts, food booths, parades with Dan Kubiak as marshal, music by The Moods and various dance groups. Admission ranges from 2.50 to 3 dollars with details to be released.
Milam voters face a compact Democratic runoff ballot with county and precinct contests including Adolph Gresak versus Evelyn Abel for County Commissioner Precinct 1 and Maurice Lowery against Tommy Chamberlain for Precinct 1 constable. Precinct 2 constable features Griss Wells versus Rex B. Jones. State races include Texas Railroad Commission nominees Jon Newton and Jerry Sadler, and Texas Court of Criminal Appeals contender Carl Dally versus W. T. Phillips. Polls open 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. with May primary voting places.
A sample ballot appears on Page 2 for Buckholts voters. Other ballots will include candidates for Constable Precinct 1 and Constable Precinct 2.
The Milam County Historical Commission will meet at 10 a.m. Thursday June 3 at the County Courthouse in Cameron to amend the constitution and form grounds and building committees for the county museum. All Milam County citizens interested in establishing the museum are invited. Miss Mary Belle Batte is president of the commission.
Gause Community finished fourth in the State Community Improvement Contest with a 50 cash award for district and regional wins. The state judging occurred May 25 in Gause with Garland Marshall presenting a silver tray. Little River Academy topped the state, Austwell Refugio second, Callisburg third. program funded by investor owned electric companies and run by Texas Agricultural Extension Service.
Vernon Walton announces Anderson- Clayton & Co. has completed the purchase of the Cotton Seed Oil Mill in Thorndale on May 27. The Oil Seed Processing Division now operates mills in California, Arizona, Mississippi, Arkansas, and Texas to serve area farmers and gins.
Cameron council hears Little League Association request for funds to operate a summer recreation program and salary of 200 dollars for four weeks, with potential 300 more if combined with another job. Kelm seeks 600 dollars for umpires and field maintenance. United Fund support uncertain. Other actions include building code postings, training a reserve maintainer, railroad underpass concerns, ambulance service talks, dog control plans, tree replacements, and a June 18 sales tax seminar led by state officials.
