Caution on Feeding Hay From Drought Affected Grains
As pasture and hay resources dwindle this summer, beware nitrate buildup in highly fertilized grain crops harvested for hay or grazing. Nitrates remain in the stalk and are unsafe if high at harvest, especially in sorghum, corn, and Johnson grass. Standing grain and forage crops can also harbor prussic acid risks, though properly cut and cured hay avoids this gas danger.
