First 1948 cotton bale ginned at Weems gin near Branchville
The first bale of 1948 cotton was ginned at the Weems gin on Wednesday morning. John A Smith delivered the bale from his Branchville area farm. the loaded seed cotton weighed 1250 pounds and 650 pounds of seed remained after ginning. Owner Robert Weems notified the Daily Herald. The bale cleared the stands around noon and the season’s early output appears to compare favorably with other years. Dry weather may hasten picking and county acreage may rise.

Polio Prevention Effort in Cameron Praised
Dr. Clifford G. Swift Milam County Health Officer and campaign director told Rotary Club members that Cameron’s polio prevention drive was a model of community cooperation. He cited 33 trucks, 156 loads of refuse, and Mayor Griffiths plan for additional city pickups. He noted polio’s uncertain spread, vaccines being tested like smallpox, and that since vaccination and cleanup six cases had occurred in three Cameron families before, none since.
