Excess Cotton Penalty Rate Set for County

Rockdale Man May Be First Casualty of Korean War
Pvt. E. W. Garza of Rockdale may be Milam County's first Korea war casualty. His mother Magdelina Garza received a telegram from Adjutant General Edward F. Witsett stating he was missing in action since July 5. Garza, likely in the far East, was among early U S troops on the Korean front. his mother had earlier lost a son in World War II.

K A Camp of Rockdale was seriously injured Monday July 17 at a signal crossing in Hearne when his car collided with another vehicle. Former Cameron Man Killed in Archer City Explosion
Ross Davis, a former Cameron resident who moved to Rockdale and later Archer City, died July 4 in an oil field dynamite blast while preparing to shoot a well casing. Also killed was Bert G. Hanson of Archer City. The explosion occurred when the dynamite detonated prematurely.

Two Injured In Head On Crash On Highway 190
Two men were injured when their cars collided head on on highway 190 west of Cameron Thursday afternoon. William Kohng of Holland was treated at Newton Memorial Hospital for cuts and bruises and Adolph Kretschmar was treated at the Denson Clinic. The cause was not explained and the incident was investigated by local patrolman Jack Higginbotham. Both cars were badly damaged.

Physical Exams For Draftees In Texas To Begin August 7
Austin reports that physical examinations for the first Texans drafted will start August 7 with inductions set for September. Registrants selected by local boards will go to main army recruiting stations in Texas and Louisiana August 7 to 11. Brig. Gen. Paul L. Wakefield says quotas are being set for 107 draft boards as Texas is called for 1005 men. Examining stations are Amarillo El Paso San Antonio Dallas Houston and Shreveport Louisiana.
