An editorial warns Milam County roads are at a breaking point across rural and main highways. It urges immediate action and a return of a County Engineer, arguing unit-system road funding and proper maintenance are essential to prevent isolation and protect farms and cities.
School patrons in the Curry district near Cameron face September transfers as Curry schools limit to grade 8. Consolidation would raise taxes, annexation requires petitions or mass meetings, and transfer costs may push families toward Cameron if city limits extend. Speed is urged due to a near transfer deadline.
The Yee High band led by Francis Cox performed at the Catholic State League of Texas convention in Westphalia from July 14 to 17. The grand march began at 9:00 a.m. from the priest’s home to the church with Bishop Byrness officiating. Short concerts followed and a noon dinner was served to all attendees.
Sgt. and Mrs. Taylor Morriss and Johnnie Gurecky returned to their home after a trip to Massachusetts.
Technical Sergeant Edell H Smith son of Frank L Wall of Route 1 Gause was selected with the 1st Battalion 27th Infantry Regiment to represent the 25th Infantry Division in Tokyo on July 4. He entered the Army in 1942 and went overseas in 1943.
Mrs Jeannie Barrett of Yarrellton was seen in Cameron on Wednesday while out shopping.
The court house clock fails to strike and seems to run constantly. Citizens, puzzled by timekeeping, urge action as locals recall alterations to the clock following a top removal. The Daily Herald has been asked to intervene.
W A Belt and Son on Highway 36 east of Cameron offer select watermelons from a renowned grower Arthur Belt. A large army tent on the highway invites Cameron residents to buy now amid modest market conditions.
The Daily Herald nominates Mrs. B. F. Robinson to receive the prize for the best home improvement in Cameron this year. Mr. and Mrs. Robinson bought the old Marburger home on East 23rd street and she transformed it into an attractive postwar house with notable grounds.
Two Milam county Black war veterans were released on suspended sentences after county attorney Bill Morrison recommended leniency. They faced assault with prohibited weapons charges, with penalties ranging from jail to prison terms. Allen Speed of Thorndale attacked Troy E. Brown, while Elisha McCullough of Cameron shot and stabbed a Cameron woman, Mae Gates.
Mr and Mrs Lester Glass travel extended trip through the northwest and west with stops in Denver and Yellowstone. A card from Los Angeles notes their flower market visit while the Florist shop is run by their son Donald Glass and his wife.
Mr and Mrs E P Werner and daughter Martha Lee entertained Houston relatives with a barbecue Friday Martha Lee is visiting Waco this week with relatives for a stay observe.
Congressman W. R. Poage forwards to President Truman a letter urging flood control for the Brazos and Little River valleys. He cites Little River’s flood variety and warns of recurring property loss and hundreds of lives lost in the Cameron area, urging inclusion in a national program.
Ten indictments were returned by the Grand Jury. Three defendants were not in custody and names withheld pending apprehension. Indictments include Wood Butler for robbery Allen Speed and Elisha McCullough for aggravated assault with a prohibited weapon Johnny Bell for two aggravated assault cases Tootsie Benson for aggravated assault. Arrests already made cover swindling with worthless check wife and child desertion and theft.
Jack DuBois, a Pacific War veteran and former Post Adjutant, was installed July 1 as commander of Edwin Hardy Post American Legion. Other officers include Bill Wallace as 1st Vice Commander and John Henry Wilson as Finance Officer. The post donated 100 to Texas City Disaster Relief and 100 to the summer recreation program.
The Cameron Red Sox resume Central Texas League action Sunday against Sparta at Lawless Green Field starting 2 30 p m. Publicity director John Henry Wilson ordered placards for the game, aiming to clinch a finals spot as previous non schedule games did not count toward percentages.
Bassel Wilson Produce Company of Temple has purchased the equipment and stocks of the Peter Company Inc in Cameron. Albert A Noack becomes new manager and plans year round poultry packing and expanded seeds merchandising. Wilson calls Cameron ideal for growth and a key factor in regional farm income development.
Ben Arnold School District voted 40 to 5 to raise the maintenance tax to 50 cents, now 60 cents with 10 cents for bonds, to meet new state requirements. The move allows high school transfers to Cameron and bus transportation for students within two and a half miles, funded by state funds. Clarkson district also voted to reach the 50 cent minimum, but no report on results.
The Herald reports petitions are circulating in Bell County to call an August election on adopting the county unit system for roads. The Milam County court will not order an election without a voter petition. A car owned by Anton Hanel burned near the Green Motor Company around 8 p.m. Monday night. Firemen, aided by sand, could not save the vehicle and the blaze was caused by a loose electrical connection.
