Railroad Week observed in Cameron July 13 to 18 with 750000 railroad workers nationwide. Local celebration led by agents from Santa Fe Southern Pacific and Railway Express, plus talks to Chamber of Commerce directors and Knights of Columbus officers. Mayor Smith issued a proclamation praising railroads and urging observance.
Proponents of the elective system for Cameron trustees say seven citizens have promised to run in the August 11 special election. Names are withheld. Six current trustees plan to seek re election: J. Martin F. Lesovsky Rush A. Thomas H. H. Stedman Mrs. Giles McDermott and Dr. T. E. Crump. Dr Newton, a state senate candidate, has not announced his intentions.
T P Morris, 63, store keeper at Branchville, was beaten and robbed while walking to his home after closing. Coleman Harrison of Arkansas confessed to the crime to District Attorney Emory B. Camp and Sheriff Kennedy. Nathaniel Wells, of the Foster farm near Branchville, is jailed as an accessory. Harrison was captured in a box car at Valley Junction with officers guiding the arrest.
Nig Moody ships his prize greyhound pup to Miss Georgia Dolan in Brooklyn New York for express shipment. Moody says the dog was well treated and trained in Texas where his greyhounds raced at multiple tracks and produced top performers in America.
L Wilson displays a Giant Haliburton peach weighing over a half pound at the Herald office on Tuesday. The fruit, bred from Hale and Adberta, was grown in his yard and the tree yielded about 20 peaches this year after producing only three last year.
Parole boards from Williamson Bell McLennan Falls Lee Milam counties met in Cameron on Thursday in the first joint gathering since Governor Allred appointed the boards. E. C. Cole chaired the Milam panel with members Cooke ONeill Richter Svetlik and others. W. W. Holcomb spoke on board purpose and rehabilitation.
Cameron launches a local women’s softball team with Mrs. Harvey Radtke as manager and captain. The season opener was played in Temple on Wednesday night, with plans for weekly games and a hoped for league circuit in Cameron and other cities. The roster includes Winona Slaughter, Mrs Gene Knipp, Althea Harris, Ferrell Harris, Agnes Harber, Curley Smitherman, A B Caney, Effie Harris, Allie Kinard, Gladys Watson, Oscar Schiller, Clinton Miller, and Radtke.
H C Johnson of Harris County, a world war veteran and mechanical engineer, runs on a bonus money platform for railroad commissioner. He cites a 140000 vote tally two years ago, promises to enforce anti discrimination in pipeline service, curb gas wastage, support universal proration, appraise gas properties to lower rates, reorganize the truck and bus division, coordinate transportation forms, and create a new department to supervise wells to protect farmers and landowners from fraud.
J B White, Cameron Herald editor and Indian relief collector, received flint specimens from L C Wood a high school coach. Four arrows from New Mexico include one Comanche point. one blade from New Mexico and another point found near Alpine. The artifacts join the Herald museum collection and are gratefully acknowledged by the editor.
Fred Joseph of Taylor will be here Thursday to install officers for the coming year as head of the ninth district. Cameron Council notes his long service in the order and welcomes him to the post with pride.
Mr. and Mrs. Billie Marek and Miss Billie Marek and Miss Macal return to the city after a trip through the east and Ontario. They visited New York and various sites including Victoria Canada. Marek, a collector of Indian relics, presents a spear from Victoria and rocks from Niagara Falls and Floyd Colling Cave.
Milam County youths travel to Dallas for the Beseda national dance at the Texas Centennial. About 490 Czechs from Texas participate. Milam group is directed by Mrs. Zalesky of Cameron with assistance from Mrs. Barta of Marak and J. J. Bacaa orchestra.
Deputy Sheriff J W Carter of Milano and railroad officer J B R Wheeler arrested a Negro suspect near Valley Junction in Robertson County after a Branchville merchant robbery. The man confessed and said the stolen money was hidden in a freight car en route to Houston.
