Cotton acreage surge signals possible 1950 production controls
The Agriculture Department reports 26.38 million acres under cotton on July 1, up 14.2 percent from a year earlier. With yields forecast near 269 pounds per acre, total production could exceed last year and prompt a grower referendum on planting allotments and marketing quotas for 1950. Government plans and pending Congress legislation aim to update production control laws to fit rising yields and acreages.

Cotton acreage limits and price support details
The article explains that current laws cap planting at about 27.5 million acres, with a workable 22.5 million acres sufficing for domestic and export needs. It notes a carryover of roughly 5.6 million bales and a government cotton investment near 585 million dollars. Prices are supported at about 30 cents per pound for 1948 crop cotton, with 1949 support expected to drop about a cent, and the government must back this year’s crop at 90 percent of parity. Parity adjusts with farm purchase prices to stay fair to farmers and consumers.
