Social Security may be trebled in 15 years
Washington July 4 Congressional drafters of new social security legislation reportedly agreed to a staged payroll tax increase and broader coverage. The plan would raise taxes from 1 to 1.5 percent in 1950 and to 2 percent in 1952, then to 2.5 percent in 1960 and 8 percent in 1965 for both employer and employee. It would add about 12 million people to current coverage, extend to self employed and household workers, boost benefits by over 50 percent, and create new disability payments.
