Community Bank & Trust Charter Hearing Planned

Milam Areans testimony continued last week and will resume August 5 by the State Department of Banking on a charter application for a proposed new Rockdale bank Community Bank and Trust. After testimony finishes transcripts go to the state treasurer banking commissioner and the board for study a ruling will be made on charter grant.

Land Dispute Erupts in Brushy Creek Area Near Georgetown

A land clash on the Brushy Creek east bank between Leander and Round Rock led to violence last Sunday. Rodger Burleson was charged with attempted murder after firing on a man who was dismantling no trespassing signs and a fence during a dispute over a 200 yard wide strip. Lampasas officials announce a crackdown on illegal power usage with jumper cables. Charges filed in one case and several under investigation.

Thorn dale observes demolition of old First National Bank building

Nostalgia grips Thorn dale as crews begin tearing down the structurally sound downtown bank building once home to the First National Bank until 1933. The post office occupied it until 1975, and the structure has stood vacant since.

Hearing Set On Annexation Controversy And Lottery Warning

Milam County residents are warned against joining the Vacation of the Month Club promoted via circulars with a Milano PO box. County Atty. John B. Henderson Jr. calls it an illegal lottery and outlines penalties. A Cameron public hearing on annexing 380 acres to Cameron is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. Tuesday July 5 at the fire station hall. Current city limits total 2,275 acres. proposed adds 2,655 acres across three sections near 21st St Fannin St Highway 77 and Highway 190. Citizens in affected areas may attend to comment.

Fuller Pleads Guilty to DWI Probation Probation Modified

Christopher S. Fuller formerly of Rogers pled guilty in district court to a subsequent DWI offense. Judge Don Humble probated a two year Texas CD sentence. Fuller owes 107.50 court costs and a 10 monthly probation supervisory fee. County Attorney John B. Henderson Jr. also reports Henry Brown’s probation was revoked and a four year Texas CD sentence imposed and moved to Huntsville.

Three juveniles caught after gas station theft in Cameron

Milam County deputies detained three youths in Cameron after they stopped for fuel at Hugo Aigner's station in Ben Arnold and drove away without paying. They fled in a stolen car from Lubbock, struck a light pole, abandoned the vehicle, and were captured on foot. The Milam County Jail underwent a formal inspection, with results due in about six weeks.

Voting Starts In Milam County Beef Referendum

Voting in the national beef referendum begins Tuesday July 5 at the ALCS office in Cameron for Milam County producers. 369 Milam cattle producers registered June 6-17. ballots mailed to requests must be postmarked by July 15. ASCS office hours are 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. with one vote per business entity. at least 50 percent turnout required. two thirds nationwide needed for approval.

Hill Ruling Details Juvenile DUI Bond Rules in Texas

Texas Attorney General John Hill says minors aged 14 to 17 charged with driving while intoxicated may face jail if bond cannot be posted. Juveniles must be segregated from adult detainees and may be moved to the pending-county court if arrested elsewhere. Juveniles cannot discharge the charge by a prearranged fine without an open court appearance with a guardian present.

Rosebud Dam Repairs Near Completion

City Manager Dan Roark announced the Rosebud Dam repair should finish in about two weeks if weather remains favorable. Backside fill is compacted, French drains will remove inner water, and cement spillway tube forming should be poured by week’s end to secure the lake’s water supply.
