Local Boy Dodson Honored for Grayback Service

The message from President Truman honors James Ray Dodson Coxswain U S Navy who perished aboard the U S S Grayback in the East China Sea on February 26 1944. Dodson earned multiple decorations including the Purple Heart and the Submarine Combat Patrol Insignia for his wartime service.

Grand Jury Recalled For July Term at Court House

The May term Grand Jury will reconvene Thursday July 10 at the court house. County Attorney Morrison said enough cases are pending to warrant the session. The law change during the war allows the grand jury to be called any time during the term when the prosecuting attorney approves.

Kirk Bros open new feed store in Cameron

Kirk Brothers announce the opening of a new seed and feed store on Highway 77 in Cameron. The building at 1501 North Travis features a modern metal design and concrete floors and will also serve as the headquarters for Kirk Truck Lines. The store, named Kirk Brothers, is set to open Saturday July 5 and will carry Red Chain brand feeds.

Dr Newton Loses Appeal To Texas Court

Dr. W R Newton a Cameron central Texas surgeon and Newton Clinic owner lost his appeal for a new hearing before the Court of Criminal Appeals in Austin. Convicted in Tulsa in 1946 of assault and attempted murder in the wounding of Dr Roy Hunt in 1942, he faced multiple trials and reversals before final conviction and a two year term. The court denied a re hearing after arguments by Dan Moody. The mandate will go to Tulsa for processing and he faces Huntsville prison unless pardoned.

Reprieve Granted for Dr W R Newton

Governor Beauford Jester granted a 30 day emergency reprieve to Dr. W R Newton in Cameron. The stay follows a 1946 Tulia conviction tied to the 1942 shooting of Dr. Roy Hunt, who survived. The reprieve allows care for 12 to 15 patients awaiting major surgery and time to arrange his medical practice and personal affairs.

Williamses depart for month long western vacation

Mr and Mrs R P Williams leave Cameron for a month long trip to the far west and northwest. They plan to spend the night in Brownwood with relatives, then visit their son in California, tour Montana, and see Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming. Williams previously lived near Yellowstone but never vacationed there.

Cameron to Close Friday for Independence Day Observation

Cameron will close on Friday July 4 for the Independence Day observance with 106 businesses listed with the Chamber of Commerce for the published notice. No official celebration is planned. many will observe Sunday hours or stay open. The Chamber sponsors a more thorough closing this year.

Old Style Planter Displayed By Niley Smith Here

An 1877 planter by David Bradle works is shown at The Herald. Niley Smith loaned the relic from Branchville where it sits among a dozen obsolete implements in the John A. Smith farm collection. The planter, used on Brazos and Little River bottoms farms until the 1940s, shows a wood frame seed box and spindle exciter driven by cog wheels and a chain. Smith hopes a proper preservation site is kept for these historic tools.

Save Children Plan Organized In Cameron Texas

A local branch of Save The Children Federation is formed in Cameron. The meeting occurred Monday at the courthouse with Miss Gladys Pierce as temporary chair and Mrs. Julia Hillman aiding Brazos area. Meetings will be held each fourth Tuesday. a clothing store will offer low price clothing to needy children.

Johnson to appeal after assault case verdict

Lee Johnson was found guilty of assault with intent to murder Dick Baggett with malice aforethought. The jury fixed a 3 year penitentiary sentence. A new trial motion was overruled and Johnson gave notice of appeal to the Court of Criminal Appeals in Austin. He posted 2500 recognizance bonds with sureties and has 60 days to file the statement of facts and bills of exception.
