Hood and Sheridan Classmates at West Point

Gen Hood, born in Kentucky, graduated with Gen Sheridan in the same West Point class. His father was a noted physician and Hood had an uncle in Congress who helped secure his appointment. A cotton market surge followed a New Orleans notice day as buyers prepared July deliveries. Brown led a move to break the Brown-WP coalition and cap prices, paying up to 6 million dollars for 120,000 bales, much from New York. Cotton rose to 14 cents in New Orleans and 13 cents in New York. Brown operators now control about two thirds of cotton stock amid late crop expectations, signaling higher prices ahead for cotton goods.
