Burglary Ring Tangles Nine Out-of-State Suspects

Nine out-of-state residents were arrested in Somerville and charged with two counts of burglary and exercising control over stolen property. The burglary involved beer groceries drug supplies a CB base station and rifle from Lakeview Drive-In Grocery Birch Creek State Park on Jan 19. A second count covered theft of household items from a residence.

Hearne Drug Case Yields Probated Sentences

Judge Don Humble presided as two of four Hearne arrests from January 19 for marijuana and heroin possession were sentenced in district court. A Houston woman received two years probation after heroin possession conviction, and a Hearne man also drew a two year probated term.

Lampasas 4-H FFA Auction Sets County Record

Lampasas County 4-H and FFA members achieved a record auction total at the annual Lampasas County Junior Livestock Show selling club projects for 39,390.70 dollars, surpassing the 1974 record by over 12,000 dollars. The event drew broad local attention and showcased rising prices across the sale.

Auditors To Check New County System Progress

A report on the new county bookkeeping system will be presented by Harris Havens and Co to county commissioners at a called meeting next Friday. The firm’s auditors will visit Cameron to verify compliance with recommendations. The court also awarded a $10,609 bid for two sheriff model cars to Hefley Stedman Motor Co. and amended the revenue sharing budget for pole line relocation and Precinct 3 leader repairs.

Elderly Man Found Dead In His Home

Police found Russell Washington, in his eighties, dead at his home at 1101 W. 10. Neighbors reported him missing for some time and said he had been deceased about two weeks. City health officer Dr. E. Douglas Perrin leads the death investigation. A grassfire near Hanover road scorched about 50 acres of pasture and woodland with volunteer firefighters sparing the area.

Alcoa Reports Net Income Up in 1976

Aluminum Company of America reports 1976 net income of 143.8 million or 4.14 a share, up from 64.8 million in 1975. Sales reached 2.9 billion, with shipments 1,638,000 tons and primary production at 1,409,000 tons, aided by higher demand and cost reductions. Alcoa of Australia earned record revenues and a 31.0 million share.

License Tags Go On Sale At Tax Office

Milam County residents may renew vehicle license tags Tuesday in the tax office in Cameron Gaither's at Rockdale and Ideal Motor Co in Thorndale. License tag renewal notices mailed statewide. All vehicles must bear 1977 stickers April 1 with 1977 in upper right corner and 1976 in upper left corner. Drivers without 1977 stickers after April 1 face fines by DPS or other officers.

Three Jailed On Charges Of Burglary In Branchville Case

Cameron area men Samuel Henderson Melvin Wells and Ray Charles Whitfield were arrested by Temple police and charged with the January 26 burglary of a Branchville home. Bond set at 5900 each. Items including air conditioners a typewriter were reported stolen. Richard Lynn Clark pled guilty to burglary of a habitation in district court receiving five years with sentence suspended and costs.

Manpower funds awarded to Milam County and six others

The U S Department of Labor grants 336 476 to the Central Texas Manpower Consortium with Milam County receiving 47 275 The funds target long term unemployed residents in Coryell Hamilton Lampasas Mills San Saba and Bell counties for public works jobs paying 2000 to 10000 yearly Applicants must have 15 weeks of unemployment and exhausted unemployment benefits
