The Rev. Eugene L. Strickland will be formally installed as pastor of Cameron’s First Presbyterian Church at 8 p.m. Sunday by a Central Texas Presbytery commission. A reception follows at 505 E. Sixth St. Strickland began the Cameron pastorate Jan 1 after transferring from the Southwest Presbytery.
Charles Ray Halpaine, 17, of 002 W. 7th St., is off the critical list at Newton Memorial Hospital after a motorcycle auto crash Monday at E Fourth and North Fannin. He suffered concussion, left arm fracture, internal injuries, broken ribs and loss of six front teeth. Mrs. Wall ace Culpepper, 1801 N Jackson, driver of the auto, was uninjured. A parked truck at the intersection obscured sight lines, causing the collision as Culpepper went north on North Fannin and Halpaine rode east on West Fourth. The two vehicles sustained minor damage.
County Attorney Jack Prescott announced that District Judge W C Wallace has scheduled a district grand jury session for 10 a m February 1. The Milam District Grand Jury will hear 17 cases at the February 1 session with a juror panel called for that Wednesday.
A county frame barn in East Cameron burned Saturday. origin undetermined. The Commissioners Court voted to buy the former Maysfield Merchantile building on US 77 North for 9 000 dollars to warehouse Precinct 2 roadwork equipment moved from the old site. Lavert McKinney is precinct commissioner.
The Rev. Kenneth Haley Sr. becomes pastor of Cameron First Christian Church starting Sunday February 5 after 13 years in ministry. He comes from Antioch Christian Church in Hooks Texas and succeeds supply pastor C H Morris. He has served in District 16 and on the Texas Board of Christian Churches planning conference. He and his wife are active in youth camp and conference work and are Mason and Eastern Star members. They have two sons at Phillips University Enid Okla and a daughter 13 in the eighth grade. Kenneth Jr. attends Bible College and Ton Haley is in seminary serving as pastor at Cement Okla.
Cameron residents are urged to light porch lights Monday January 30 from 7 to 8 pm to show support for the Mothers March of Dimes. Volunteers will collect at homes with lights on led by chairwoman Mrs. Robert Foster and district captains Mrs. E O Schiller, Mrs. Jackson, Mrs. Miller, Mrs. Mullina, Mrs. Ripley, Mrs. Matula, Mrs. Coker, Mrs. Rivers and Mrs. Barcenas.
Miss Mary Randolph a Cameron area educator and sister of two other teachers is nominated for Texas Teacher of the Year by the Cameron Delphian Club. Her career spans Perry Milam County Cameron schools and leadership roles in local and state teacher groups.
H H Stedman of Stedman Ford Co Cameron has been named associate director in the Texas Automotive Dealers Association. Appointment announced by Gordon Rountree Waco TADA Director for the Waco Area. TADA president F D Mitchell Central Motor Co Waco praised Stedmans character and ability. The statewide group includes over 1200 franchised Texas dealers with headquarters in Austin.
Cameron and Milam officials report low poll tax registrations for the city and county with 1936 county registrations and 370 city payments so far. The deadline is January 31 at midnight, with offices open to accept payments. The only county or higher election is a special senatorial race to replace William Blakley.
Sheriff Carl Black warned of icy bridges in Cameron and Milam County as sleet and freezing rain fell. Bridges were the only major danger on county highways with temperatures dropping to the mid-20s and gusty winds from a Northwest blizzard.
Two 7 30 p m women and men basketball games at Cameron Yoe Gym Saturday raise funds for the 1961 Milam County March of Dimes. Featured pits Pitiful Pearls versus Sadsackers with Cameron Independent Men and Rosebud Independent Men following. Admission 50 cents adults and high school students 25 cents children. Fashion show planned with Cameron merchants. date to be announced.
Ja cob Will Bill Shoaf 69 died in Klamath Falls December 24 after 25 years there. Survived by wife Mary of Klamath Falls two brothers Charles Fort Worth and Fred Rosenberg a sister Mrs E L Angell Cameron. Funeral services held December 28 at Ward's Klamath Funeral Home Rev Freeman Schmitt officiated. Concluding services at Klamath Memorial Park pallbearers Earl Clark Lloyd Hardley Howard Jackson Clint Myers Francis Spencer Martin Parson.
The weatherman warned of continued cold as the Norther lingered in Milam County for a third day. A low of 25 was recorded early Wednesday. January temperatures show highs and lows across several days, with rainfall totaling 0.2 inch on January 19 and 0.13 inch on January 24.
Nelson family plans to move February 4 to Jasper Texas as Robert Nelson accepts a position with the Corps of Engineers legal department. He previously lived in Cameron seven years and practiced law in Cameron and Rockdale serving as county attorney for four years. Mrs. Nelson worked in Cameron Independent Schools as secretary to the superintendent for five years with three sons Bobby 14 Jeffery 12 and Mike 7. The family attends First Baptist Church Cameron and participates in church education activities and Building Committee work.
About thirty Cameron CYO members and leaders will attend the Annual Austin Diocese CYO convention this weekend at the A&M College Campus. They will leave Cameron at 5 30 Friday afternoon and return Sunday evening. The highlight is Saturday night with the awards banquet and dance and new officers will be elected.
The Milam 20th Judicial District Court reported 128 civil and 40 criminal cases disposed of in 1960. Grady Allen noted 270 civil cases on the docket with 88 tried and 142 pending as of December 31 1960. Judge W C Wallace succeeded O D Graham as district judge after a 1960 primary victory.
Yoe FFA members attended a practice judging session at Texas A and M College. The event previewed competitions with up to 890 teams statewide. Contests were described as educational and good training for youth leadership and discipline. Poultry team includes Edmund Michalka Steve Hubnik Ernest Vogelsang Larry Hillman Gerald Johnson Thomas Fisher Mervyn Johnson. Livestock team features Bobby Hillman Craig White Dennis Lazek Philip Hubnik. Dairy judging team members Ronald Kostrom Robert Moran Sam Lawhon Jerry Lawhon and Martin Jistel. Grass judging team members Louis Rozner Leo Rozner Henry Tomasek Jr and Frankie Dehart. Meat judging team members Bobby Scott George Kurtis.
