Milam Areans Justice of the Peace Rules on Jail Death

Milam Areans Justice of the Peace Bill Hill ruled that 25 year old Johnny Joe Laskowski found dead in Williamson County Jail Georgetown committed suicide by hanging with a rope made of torn blanket strips. An autopsy noted wrist slashing. Laskowski faced marijuana and peyote charges. Rosebud candidates for City Marshal were repeatedly rejected. Four council members approved, two began work but declined due to housing or heart surgery. Another candidate was turned down last week.

More Stolen Checks Cashed Across Cities

Gatesville police report extends payroll check theft from Croyell Memorial Hospital with 39 checks cashed totaling 799.51. Five checks valued at 799.51 were cashed in Stephenville on January 13, part of a theft of about 200 blank payroll checks from the hospital.

Hearne High School Contract Awarded to Sentry Construction

The Hearne school board awarded Sentry Construction Co of Bryan a $174 403 bid to build four regular classrooms one science room and a counselor s office for the high school campus. Fort Hood will lay off 367 civilian employees by Sept 30 1978 through attrition and a restricted hiring procedure to fill only critically essential positions.

New Industry Moving Here in Cameron by Butler Corp

H F Butler Corp of Union New Jersey announces a Cameron plant to weld steel foundations and casings for industrial machinery. A 12000 square foot facility will employ about 20 workers at start rising to 50 in 18 months with local financing and a training program by Texas State Technical Institute. Groundbreaking occurred at the 15 acre Industrial Park site and completion is expected in six months with plans to operate by October or November.

Second Bus Provided For Senior Citizens

County Judge O B Harden announces a second bus for senior citizens to improve transport in north and south Milam. The Hill Country Community Action Association funds the Cameron area bus, stationed at Cameron Community Center, serving Cameron Buckholts and areas north of the river. The Rockdale bus, housed at the Senior Citizens Center, will serve Rockdale Milano Gause Thorndale and nearby rural areas. Coordinator Denise Doss can be reached at 446-2666.

Mann Retires After 30 Years With Soil Service

Wayne Mann district conservationist with the Soil Conservation Service in Cameron retires after more than 30 years. He and his wife Vivian have lived in Cameron 23 years and will stay there. He previously worked in Vernon and Pankhandle before moving to Cameron. A retirement supper was held in Temple January 14 with Bill Marek and Adrian Moore as speakers praising his career.

St Monica Priest Named Monsignor by Papal Appointment

Rev. John Geiser of St. Monica's Catholic Church in Cameron was named monsignor by Pope Paul VI on December 26. He has served Cameron for 18 years and was ordained in 1930 in Galveston. Two Catholic priests were also appointed.

United Way Campaign Surpasses Goal in Milam County

Rod Holcombe reports Milam County United Way drive topped its goal with 10 410 in contributions and pledges. Funds will aid Cameron Day Care Center Cameron Little League Lone Star Girl Scout Council and more, plus Red Cross and Salvation Army. Milam County Historical Museum plans 2 p.m. meeting January 25 to organize a membership drive and schedule the museum opening.
