The Texas House elected state Rep. Joe Straus of San Antonio as speaker in a voice vote, succeeding Tom Craddick who had led the chamber for 40 years. Craddick will retain his district as Straus urged bipartisan cooperation and district-focused reform during the 81st regular session. The House adjourned briefly to accommodate the Obama inauguration, while the Senate faced more partisan tension over rule changes marking a shift toward smoother floor action.
