Milam-Arean Home Destroyed by Fire Near Rockdale
A landmark country home named Old Modesette Place, about 14 miles northwest of Rockdale, burned Monday afternoon. The 80 year old structure on FM 486 between Sharp and San Gabriel belonged to Mr and Mrs L H Johnson, who had invested about 25 000 in recent renovations. A second item notes Hearne phone operators ending with Southwestern Bell and calls shifted to General Telephone in Bryan, the first time Hearne lacks a local operator in over 50 years.

Service Held For Educator O. J. Thomas
O J Thomas 82 Cameron and Prairie View College educator died last Monday at Prairie View after a long illness. Funeral was held Thursday at Prairie View. Born 1894 in Trawick Texas he moved to Cameron in 1923 joining Texas College at Tyler before becoming principal and voag teacher at Cameron High School. The school later named for him is now O J Thomas Junior High. He served as teacher trainer at Prairie View and directed placements for graduates until 1964. He held leadership roles including state director for the Interscholastic League for Negro schools president of the State Negro Teachers Association president of the Prairie View Alumni Association and life member of the American Teachers Association. A Cameron park near the junior high is named for him. Memorials to Mrs. Thomas Box 2666 Prairie View.

Driftwood Man Charged With DUI And Hit Run
A Driftwood Texas man Paul Franks was charged with driving under the influence of drugs and failure to stop after a wreck. He was arrested by DPS Trooper Milton Wright after a collision with a pickup driven by Ernest Wright of Rockdale west of Rockdale Tuesday and released on $500 bond on each count.

Moral Choices Series Launch at Herald

Two Accidents Reported On Highway 77 Between Ben Arnold and Burlington
Two crashes within 30 minutes on Highway 77 between Ben Arnold and Burlington caused no injuries. A Red Arrow tractor-trailer driven by Gary Wayne Kyle jackknifed into a field after swerving to avoid a car, turning its second trailer over. Tennie Cox's southbound station wagon was rear struck by William Mosley’s pickup while offering aid.

ECA Classes To Begin For CAS Volunteers
Cameron Ambulance Service offers Emergency Care and Transportation of the Sick and Injured classes starting January 17. Sessions run Mondays and Thursdays from 6 to 10 pm at the Yee campus Homemaking Building, sponsored by Texas Department of Health Resources Region Six. After 30 hours of instruction, students may qualify for state certification as Emergency Care Attendants. Registration is at City Hall and tuition is free for CAS volunteers.

Pipeline Break Near Rosebud Emits Oil Smell
A crude oil pipeline break near Rosebud caused a strong odor Friday morning as over 100 barrels spilled into the air before repairs. The line owned by Arndale Pipeline Co of Port Arthur ruptured at a weld in the ten inch pipe, first noticed about 4 a.m. local time.
