Tom Turner Receives Rotary Ovation In Waco Talk

Cameron Rotary Club honored F.M.L. Tom Turner assistant to Baylor president Abner McCall for a lively address on newspaper typos. Turner recounted Hillsboro roots, 15 start in journalism, and his rise with the Dallas News. He earned an honorary doctorate from Mary Hardin Baylor and Journalism Hall of Fame recognition.

Fire Destroys Garage and Truck on Salem Road

Tuesday afternoon a fire destroyed a garage, a pickup, and an automobile at the Reeves frown farm on Salem Road west of Cameron. Saddles and storage were burned. the blaze was likely started by nearby trash burning. Grass fires were also reported nearby but brought under control.

Cameron School Board Extends Dodson Contract To 1972

Cameron Independent School District approves a three year extension for Superintendent D R Dodson to July 1 1972. The board accepts biology teacher Jack Ruzickas resignation to farm and hires James P Weber as the new biology teacher starting January 20. They also review Governor committee consolidation plans potential to reduce Milam County seven districts to one county system amid mixed reactions.

City Taps $11 543 From Sales Taxes

A one percent sales tax collected from July through September added 11 543 81 to the city coffers. The latest payment rose 400 from the September first payment. The funds go to the general fund and were in last September’s budget. It is expected to add about 45 000 annually and avert a proposed property tax hike.

First 1969 baby welcomed at St Edward Hospital

Cameron welcomed its first baby of 1969 on Wednesday January 1. Michael Howard Bradley, an eight pound boy, was born at 11 50 am to Mr and Mrs Glen Bradley of 201 West First Street at St Edward Hospital.

Cameron City Council approves land lease and sub division plat

The Cameron City Council leased 29 acres along Little River for one year at 312.50 with renewal option. A 24 house subdivision plat by Anton Anderle was filed. Water service to area projected by February 1 from B&W Construction with lift stations pending. Utility work and paving plans proceed, and renewal talks with HUD continue in Fort Worth.

Cameron Public School Announces Winter Break Schedule

Cameron Public School students will have a holiday Friday January 17 while teachers have an end of semester workday. Classes dismiss Thursday after noon January 16 and resume Monday January 20 at the start of the new semester.

Cameron Blood Program Faces Shutdown on Low Donor Totals

Central Texas Red Cross warns Cameron could lose its blood program if the next Bloodmobile visit fails to collect 108 acceptable units. Friday yielded 53 units with 61 donors and eight medical disqualifications. The April visit, last of the year ending June 30, could determine continuation and costs if donors do not meet the quota.

County Taxes Paid Early. Voter Registration Lagging

County taxes have been paid by 80 percent with three weeks left before the deadline. Voter registration lags, with about July 4,600 registered versus 9,637 in Milam County in 1968. Services Held For Former Cameron Resident Eugene Gregory

Eugene Gregory age 73 died in San Antonio January 2. Born January 25, 1894 in Rockdale he was a former Cameron resident. Graveside rites were conducted at Salem Cemetery Friday at 3 p.m. Rev. J. E. Lafferty officiated. Survived by daughter Carol Davis of Houston brother Rigsby Gregory of Wichita Falls and sisters Mrs. Frank J. Rogers of Rosebud and Mrs. Lucille Przybysz of San Antonio. Marek Burns Funeral Home handled arrangements.

School Census Starts Here Man

The annual census for school children will begin Monday January 13 per Superintendent D R Dodson. Census forms go home with children for parental completion and return to school. Parents with new entrants beginning in September and no other children may pick up blanks from the superintendent at Ben Milam or from any principal’s office.

Milam County Junior Livestock Show set for 125 entries

About 125 livestock entries are expected at the Milam County Junior Livestock Show in the Cotton Compress building across from the Mobil Oil Co. warehouse. Judging begins 9:30 a.m. with eight classes and trophies for top animals. senior A&M University judging team will officiate. Entry fees fund trophies and tickets for a butcher steer and hog support the show.
