Milam County Sees Rise in Salk Polio Vaccinations

Milam County Health Unit and private doctors report increasing polio vaccination uptake with two series completed and three boosters. The health unit plans to promote injections before summer and polio season while expanding educational programs in Cameron at O J Thomas School and exploring similar efforts in other schools. January communicable disease totals include influenza 36 and tuberculosis 3, among others, with inspections of food establishments and several visitors from state health and education agencies.

Court Instructs Jury To Find Holland Not Guilty of Bribery

In 20th District Court, Judge O D Graham instructed the jury to return a not guilty verdict for Bruce Holland on bribery charges after a contentious session. Elizabeth Blalock invoked the Fifth Amendment delaying the case as prosecutors and defense sparred over witness testimony. The trial paused as the jury held in deliberation pending further proceedings.

God and Country Award Presented to John W Solomon

At a morning service of First Presbyterian Church Humboldt John William Solomon received the God and Country Award in boy scouting The presentation was made by Homer McLane president of the men of the church and Rev John Solomon pinned the medal on his son The award is given by the Protestant Committee of the church John is a member of the local Explorers Unit of The Boy Scouts of America.

Baggerly In Guard As Recruitment Honors Washington

Local high school student and football star Alvin W. Baggerly enlisted in Battery C of the 649th Anti Aircraft Artillery Battalion this week. The unit announced the recruitment campaign under way and noted the new member's swearing in during the reporting period. See BAGGERLY on page 4.

March of Dimes 1956 income falls slightly behind 1955

The final tally shows a little more than a 15 percent drop from the 1955 total of 9 735.71 dollars. The decline stems from the Salk vaccine shift toward personal rather than research needs, though Hinton Pruett emphasizes continuing support for those affected until the blight is finally behind us.

Fuchs Seeks Sponsors For Milam County Broiler Show

Milam County plans a Junior Broiler Contest with 115 FFA and 4 H members signed up and 48 sponsors so far. Sponsors pay 10 dollars per grower, up to two, to fund chicks prizes and banquet tickets for sponsor and grower after May 12. Growers enter five top broilers to compete. they keep the rest. Sharp FFA boys led by John Culp, Robert Pope, David Pope, and fellow members plus sponsors left Sharp at 7 a.m. Saturday for the San Antonio Livestock Exposition. They visited exhibits, watched the rodeo, toured Kelley AFB and Brackenridge Park on Sunday, returning home at 5 p.m. Accompanying adults were Dwight Hine and Dalton Stephens.

Drayton McLane Chamber Head As Member Drive Begun

Drayton McLane elected president of the Cameron Chamber of Commerce at a noon meeting. Ben Magness and Charles Burke named first and second vice presidents respectively. Barbara Smitherman re elected secretary manager. The drive aims to recruit eighty two prospective members led by Jimmy Wiggs. The banquet is set for March 20 at Simon George Hall with Jerry Rice catering.

Ten Nominees Screened For McCullin Award
