Vault floor uncovered under downtown mall site
Work last week uncovered a buried concrete vault floor about two feet thick, 15 to 20 feet below street level at the downtown mall. The old bank or finance house, opened in the 1880s and later closed, predated Citizens National and perhaps First National. Nearby the corner now housing Duke and Ayres also held an older financial site with problematic concrete walls. The project removed old sidewalks and curbs, finished parking levels, and shaped the central walkway, fountain, and benches to make the mall a focal point.
