Sherman Mayfield a local rancher has filed for a place on the Rogers Independent School District trustee ballot for the April 4 election. Incumbents Woodson Waits and H H Wright join Mayfield creating a three candidate field for two three year terms with the filing deadline set for March 4 during school hours.
Fire destroyed a frame house on South Jefferson Street about 11:30 p m destroying the house and lighting the neighboring home. No injuries reported as occupants were away. Elderly resident Mrs Moore found safe. Clothing and furniture donations requested for affected families. The old brass bell that rang the hours atop Milam Courthouse for nearly fifty years was lowered to the courthouse lawn by crane and will be installed inside on a platform in the first floor hall. Cast in 1891 by McShane Bell Foundry, it weighs about 1000 pounds and lacks a clapper, to be struck by a clock gong. Weighed by platform work and careful routing, the move aims for next week with a utility truck.
The 1000 pound brass bell dating to 1893 was lowered from the Milam Courthouse steeple and moved to the lawn for display after years of silence. County officials plan to place it on a platform in the first floor hall for public viewing.

Cameron and Luling, district champions, square off at Blinn College Brenham February 24 to decide the Texas Schoolboy Basketball playoffs regional representative. Cameron edged Round Rock Friday night to carry the 19-AA honor into bi-district after a last second winner.
Frank Newton 54 died at his Weatherford home after a WWII service. Born January 26, 1916 in Milano he was a former Cameron resident and an architectural supervisor. Funeral services were held at Marek Burns with Rev. J. F. Lafferty officiating. Burial in Oak Hill Cemetery. Survivors include his wife Mrs. Frank Newton of Weatherford, his mother Mrs. W. O. Newton of Cameron, and brother Joe Newton of Waco. Pallbearers were Bill Newton Henry Liebman Lee Marek Jr Dick Hughes Ray Lester and Rufus Boecker.
