Applications for hay and feed grain assistance under the emergency drouth programs must be filed by February 15 as USDA closes the program when spring pastures appear. If drought persists, the Texas Drought Committee may seek continued aid. 127 Texas counties are on the official drouth aid list.
Applications approved before February 15 allow purchase orders for up to 60 days to cover hay and feed grain needs through mid April. The program supplements the existing hay program and Farmers Home Administration emergency loans and cost share aid to help eligible farmers and ranchers maintain livestock herds.
The report analyzes how three nitrogen rates affect the growth of ER bluestem, a warm season perennial grass, during the 1952-53 season, noting that responses vary with seasonal precipitation and grass species.
Data from spring plots shows 50 pounds of elemental nitrogen per acre improves hay yields. Spring applications at 0, 50, and 100 pounds per acre were tested across 1951 to 1954 with air dry weight yields per acre rising from 1.35 to 2.10 tons in 1952 and 1953.
