Ancient 2000-year-old stone axe suggests pre-Columbian eastern US habitation
A diabase stone axe found in Albemarle County Virginia is dated about 2000 years old and shows a later 1300-year reworking. Smithsonian researchers say it indicates humans reached the Atlantic coast well before Columbus, challenging prior views of eastern North American settlement. The tool’s two sharpenings imply long-term habitation east of the mountains by nomadic bands predating Siouan peoples.
