Jose Antonio Navarro and the Texas independence saga
The Texan patriot Jose Antonio Navarro endured torture rather than renounce independence and returned to Texas on February 15 1845 after three years in a Mexican dungeon. Born to a Corsican father who settled in Mexico Navarro rose from modest schooling to lawyer, rancher and politician guiding DeWitt Colony land actions and supporting Stephen F. Austin. He held seats in Coahuila and the Mexican congress, advancing liberal causes as Texas moved toward statehood.
