Frigid Weather Urges Crop Care For Small Grains
Frigid conditions prompt Texas farmers to inspect small grain crops and fertilize live plants. Dr. Aaron Baxter says oats and barley losses occurred but most wheat survives, urging 40 to 60 pounds of actual nitrogen per acre depending on live coverage. He notes grain yields like 40 bushels wheat require about 8 pounds nitrogen, 3 pounds phosphorus, 2 pounds potash, and that 25 phosphorus and 15 potash are removed per 40 bushels of wheat.
