The Daily Herald reports three of fourteen men from Cameron who left Friday for Fort Sam Houston were rejected for failing to meet physical standards. Rejected men Albin Leo Marak Elbra Austin James and Roy Vernon Adams returned, with replacements to be called February 19. Local Selective Service Board plans to call three more men to fill the quota.
Mr. Harrison, manager of the East Texas Chamber of Commerce, has accepted an invitation to speak at the annual Chamber of Commerce banquet scheduled for March 1. The event will feature his address as the keynote.
Sk A Perrin Cameron schools superintendent and J B White Herald publisher face corporation court for an affray after a Wednesday fist fight at the Herald building. City Marshall Smith filed the charges following Perrin's controversial attempt to muzzle press coverage and his prior confrontations with students and Henderson. Perrin expressed no plan to resist. officials note no law protects a gentleman from press reporting.
The Red Cross quota for garments for 1941 distribution has been set with high numbers across divisions and a May 1 target. Chas. M. Hicks, director, mails notices for the 1040 annual invitation track meet in Cameron. The ninth event draws hundreds of athletes from across Texas and is hailed as the best of its kind in the state.
The British government reports 110000 Italian troops captured in Africa along with substantial guns and materiel. Only about 5000 British killed or wounded in the campaign. Germans resume bombing England claiming 18 British planes down. Harry Hopkins said to have access to English military secrets signaling deep U S Britain cooperation.
Dr James Watson was elected Chairman of the Milam County Chapter American Red Cross. Ray O Neill became Secretary and George Tanzhaf Home Service Chairman. Five men are named for the fourth call under the Selective Service system by the local board headquarters. Names include Herbert Benard Wimmer Pedro Guajardo Emil Edward Stalmach Garland Gillis Gibbs and Rudolph Balusek. Additional men next in line are Jobo Krenek Leonard Junek and Richard Baggett as a precaution. Fourteen men depart Cameron for Fort Sam Houston on January 31 with February call to report February 7 at 11 AM for induction.
