Nell Ross No1 Wildcat to Drill 15 000 Foot Smackover

Shell Oil plans a second Milam County Smackover wildcat named Nell Ross No1 on a 15 000 to 20 000 acre block. Location near Adoue Estate east of Milano, 4 miles southwest of Gause. Previous Adone Estate drilled 14 457 feet then abandoned. Willy Matejcek in Lee County also reached 16 500 feet without success. Major firms hold leases in eastern Milam County.

Max McClaren reports his milk goat Sheila gave birth Tuesday morning to three kid goats named FDR JFK and Low. The sowing triplets are unusual for a litter, as many births average two and sometimes one.

Sentenced Men Await Trial In Two Other Cities

Two Austin men, Gayle Chandler and John B. Locke, each received ten year penitentiary terms from District Judge W C Wallace on January 21 after guilty pleas. Chandler faces trial in Austin on four burglary cases linked to Thorndale and Rockdale while Locke awaits trial in Sonora on Rockdale burglary charges. Henderson Jr., county attorney, prosecuted.

Association To Aid Mentally Retarded Meeting Planned

An organizational meeting for an association to aid mentally retarded children and adults in the area will be held at 7 38 p m Wednesday February 10 at the Lucy Hill Patterson Library. Rev wd W Erskine leads the committee assisted by Mrs James Throckmorton and Mrs Lee Roy Carter and urges musicians teachers ministers and others to attend. Similar groups exist nationwide with 56 in Texas. They work to provide educational training and recreational facilities for the nation’s five million mentally retarded.

Annual Girl Scout Cookie Sale Opens in Cameron

The cookie sale begins at 4 p.m. Friday February 5 in Cameron with registered Junior and Cadette Girl Scouts selling boxes for 30 cents. Proceeds support the local day camp and Camp Tex-Lake. The sale runs through February 12.

Buckholts Youth Starts Swine Venture at 16

Robert Lehmann of Buckholts begins a swine breeding and selling business on his family farm near Yarrleton after a Milam County Farm Bureau project inspired him. He built facilities, raises two registered sows a boar three gilts and ten pigs, aims to expand, and plans college for animal husbandry after high school.

Motel Expansion Plans Announced in Cameron

Cameron motel owner Bassel Wilson announced plans to expand the Milam Motel on Highway 36 and 77 with eight new units and a modern swimming pool. Engineers will visit Friday to finalize site size and specs, with bids to follow. The mayor bought the property in 1964 from the Jacketts who built it in 1953, now managed by Mr. and Mrs. Fred Starnes.

Milano School Heads New Three Year Superintendent Contract

Milano School trustees approved a three year contract for Supt R L Porter at last Thursday’s meeting. The contract runs through June 30 1968 and reflects board approval of the superintendent’s work. The board also signed the Federal Agreement to comply with the Civil Rights Act of 1964, continuing government lunchroom and other aid programs.

Milam County and City Poll Taxes Near Low 1964 Levels

Officials report city and Milam County poll taxes for the off election year were low. County tax assessor Walter White said 3,018 Milam County polls had paid before the January 31 deadline while city poll taxes reached 623 versus 918 last year per city secretary Buddy Fuller.

Revered Wierth Named New Ben Arnold Pastor

The Rev. Clifford E. Wierth will assume duties as pastor of the United Church of Christ at Ben Arnold this Sunday February 7. He comes from Gary Indiana where he led Fifth Ave United Church of Christ since 1958 and has served in several Illinois and Kansas communities. A native of New Bremen Ohio he studied at Elmhurst College Central Seminary Eden Theological Seminary and has two children, Margaret and Dean. A pot luck dinner will welcome the Wierth family after the morning 10 am service.

Cameron Lions and Rotarians report a total MOD drive of 755 dollars and 80 cents with 490 dollars in Mothers March and 265 dollars in Saturday Bucket Brigade. Petit Jury Rules for Plaintiff in Milam Fire Case

A 12 man petit jury in Milam District Courtroom ruled for plaintiff Mrs. Minnie Segar in a fire damage civil trial against Germania Mutual. The jury awarded $5,500 after hearing testimony on her Vogelsang Community home burn in March 1964 with District Judge W. C. Wallace presiding.

Girl Scout Fund Drive Kickoff Set for Tuesday

A kick-off breakfast Tuesday February 9 will start the 1965 Girl Scout fund drive. Chairman Henry Liebman and co-chair Forrest Sapp lead workers who meet at 7 a.m. at the Texan Cafe to plan outreach to residents and businesses for contributions. James Wentreek, 30, was elected to the board of directors and named vice president of the First State Bank of Rogers. Bank president E A Smith Jr said Wentreek will continue his prior responsibilities. He is a 1958 Baylor graduate and former Temple Junior College student, married to Mildred Schiller.

U S congressman W R Bob Poage announces Larry Paul Manley a Yee High School senior earned an appointment to the U S Naval Academy at Annapolis Maryland.
