Cameron urged to buy 101 acre club land for recreation

Advocates argue Cameron should acquire a 101 acre country club site with a $10,000 clubhouse and lake system to create park space, swimming access, fair and rodeo grounds, and a convention venue. City could gain recreation for all, while lowering costs versus Wilson Ledbetter Park plans.

Mayor's Control Hardened as Smith Wins Nominating Primary

Mayor Smith's grip on city government solidified after a low turnout nominating primary. A write in campaign for Fred Jackson drew 58 votes, while Smith received 219 of 282 cast. Vote details show 8 for Barton Brown for City Marshal and five scratches for the mayor. Officials elected include Roy Griffith and E. I. Schiller as aldermen. W. A. Morrison city attorney. W. T. Stafford tax assessor and collector. Dan Tyson secretary and treasurer. Executive committee members are Roy Baskin chair and four others.

Wells Fargo epic film opens at Cameron Theatre Sunday

Wells Fargo starring Joel McCrea and Bob Burns opens Sunday at the Cameron Theatre Cameron. The Frank Lloyd epic traces the Wells Fargo Company’s rise from Pony Express to air express and its role in the West and the Union war effort. The cast includes Frances Dee Lloyd Nolan Porter Hall and others in a story by Stuart N Lake.

School Here Gets WPA Allotment for Campus Driveways

Works Progress Administration in San Antonio has allotted $598 in funds to the Cameron schools to build driveways on the school campus. The school board will add $414. The project will employ 19 people for the stipulated period.

Milam County Confederate Veteran A J Jackson Dies at 93

A. J. Jackson, 93, longtime Milam County resident and Salty Community figure, died January 30 1938 at his home. He served under General Lee, helped organize the Salty Singing convention, and was a Methodist church official. Funeral services were held February 1 1938 at the Salty Methodist Church. He is survived by his widow and twelve children plus numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Knights of Columbus Host Picture Program and Roosevel t Dance

Cameron council Knights of Columbus held a picture program via a slide show provided by Coca Cola Bottling Co. Rudolf Richter and Louis J. Matula organized the event. The “42 Party” drew about one hundred guests at the Knights hall and heightened interest in the Roosevelt dance this year.

Robert Young Baskin dies in Huntsville auto wreck

Robert Young Baskin, 26, died in a Huntsville hospital after a car wreck on a highway near the city. He rode with J. P. Hopper and Jack Denton, both of Huntsville, who were injured. The accident was reported to his mother Mrs. Sue Baskin in Cameron. Known as Red by friends, he had recently returned to Texas from seisograph work.

Two Hurt When Car Quits Road Near City

A. J. Trigga and W. Triggs were injured Monday morning when their car left the highway east of the city, struck a ditch and embankment, and hit a tree. A. J. Trigga suffered a broken nose from flying glass. W. Triggs received a severe facial wound.
