Ennis Brother Killed in Action in Europe During War
Mrs. W F Hartley of Ennis received a War Department telegram confirming that S-Set Elton K Fisher was killed in action January 2 in Luxembourg. Born September 19 1925 in Cameron Texas he moved to Ennis after his parents died and attended Ennis High School. He served in the Army since December 20 1948, trained at Camp Fannin and Fort Meade and fought in England France Belgium and Germany earning the Purple Heart and Bronze Star. Survived by four brothers two sisters and other relatives.

A January 2 1945 War Department message lists SSgt Wilfred Engelke as missing in action over Germany since December 17 1944. Engelke enlisted February 1943 in the Army Air Corps and trained as a radio gunner on a B 24 Liberator. He served with the 15th Air Force in Italy, with ties to Hanover and Milano High and Sam Houston High School.

Missing in Action Pfc Herbert Brinkmann in Europe
War Department reports Pfc Herbert Brinkmann has been missing in action since December 18 1945 in the Luxembourg theatre of operations. He is the son of Mrs Clara Brinkmann of Caldwell and husband of Gladys Nel son from Cameron. Brinkmann enlisted five years ago and trained as an Infantryman at Camp Bowie. He departed the United States for overseas duty in August 1944. The last letter from his wife was dated December 17 1944.

Captain Michalka Saves Belgian Village in December Offensive
The 92nd Ordnance Company under Captain Rudolph Michalka of Cameron repelled German assaults to defend a Belgian village during the December front offensive. Lt. L. G. Neeley and Sgt. Glen Sanders aided in capturing twenty enemy prisoners. one Ordnanceman was wounded. Michalka, injured with a broken leg, is hospitalized. He is a Texas A&M alumnus and former Humble Oil employee, called to duty Feb 5, 1942. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Frank A. Michalka of Cameron.

Allied Prisoners Liberated on Luzon by Rangers
A hand picked Ranger Battalion freed more than 500 prisoners 70 miles north of Manila in one of the war’s boldest feats. Rangers suffered 27 killed. 500 Japanese were killed, and some prisoners were evacuated to Manila. Civilians and British soldiers among the released included 23 British, 37 Americans, with Dutch assistance from guerillas.

Missing in action SGT Lawrence Schiller in Philippines area
The Navy reports 21 year old SGT Lawrence C Schiller of the Naval Air Corps is missing in action in combat duty near the Philippines. A telegram to his parents in Wisconsin confirmed the disappearance with the January 12 letter showing he recently wrote home. He has served about 14 months overseas and trained in California and Florida. His brother Edwin Schibler serves as a pharmacist in the U S Army.

Six Hurt In Sunday Highway Crash Near Cameron
Six people were severely injured around 1 a m Sunday on Highway 77 north of Cameron when their Chevrolet sedan collided with a parked car at the Dusek store. The injured include Fred Hugater his wife and their sisters Ann Johanna Mildred and Ben Wellen. All six were taken by Marek Burns Ambulance to Newton Memorial Hospital with non fatal injuries. Sheriff Carl C Black investigated the scene.

SGT Theo Bullock of Milano led his squad through seventy days of Leyte combat earning commendation for leadership and aggressiveness. In the Ormoc sector his unit ambushed Japanese forces, killed thirty and wounded many more, then shelled positions and finished with machine guns. Bullock enlisted 1940, trained at Fort Bliss, went overseas 1943, plans to buy a farm after the war.
