Houston December 28. Census data show Texas had 413,438 farms in 1910 with 195,863 owned and 219,575 operated by tenants. Tenantry rose from 1900 to 1910, and projections imply continued growth, with Milam County listing 1,781 owned and 3,251 rented farms.
Roddy stock is removed to their new location in Yee previously occupied by Cheeves Bros. The building has been remodeled and enlarged to house Roddy Bros in a modern site.
New York December 27 report details the Girls Canning club movement backed by the agriculture department and the General Education Board. Each girl uses one tenth of an acre to grow tomatoes, learns canning methods, and produces marketable goods with portable outdoor canning outfits and trained teachers. By 1913 the program involved over 30,000 girls across fourteen states, funded mainly by the General Education Board, with some local contributions. Some students reported substantial profits, including a Mississippi girl with about 900 cans earning near $100 net.
In Austin Texas on December 28 the State returning board canvassed the November vote for all State officers except governor. It shows 213 500 votes cast for the different political parties with the socialist vote now second in size.
The Southwestern Telegraph and Telephone company mailed a notice explaining reduced night rates have been withdrawn due to congestion after 6 PM. A new distance based charging system and a reduced minimum from 25c to 15c aim to boost long distance use and aid farmers. Mrs Johnson and her children of Caldwell visit relatives in Vernon Eames's home.
A historical report notes the Socialist party rising to second place with about 24 000 votes, surpassing all other minority parties combined, while the Republican tally reaches 11 000 and Socialist Labor 500.
Texas Governor Colquitt writes a signed article in the Washington Post criticizing the Wilson administration. He denounces the Wilson Bryan Mexico policy as a failure, damns the tariff law, accuses Wilson of betraying cotton growers, and says the federal reserve act gives New York banking control. He predicts a 1916 defeat for the Democratic regime and links policies to unemployment and rising living costs.
M. W. Brown argues diversification to expand markets and reduce reliance on merchants. He notes government guidance on farming, critiques mail order competition, and urges growing a variety to create a living at home and surplus cash. Brown also stresses cooperative effort to diversify and sell locally.
In Cameron the Christmas effort by the Charity Association dispatched thirty five baskets and a load of wood totaling about fifty dollars in value. Read by the Cameron Herald the effort included donations from Sunday Schools Public Schools Civic League and individuals. The Herald praises the volunteers and notes editor H B Terrell supported the cause from Austin.
Washington reports Governor Colquitt of Texas assailing the Wilson administration over cotton policy tariff currency reforms canal toll repeal and Mexico the White House silent amid political fallout. The Colquitt broadside stirs Republican and Hearst papers while Democratic papers downplay it.
Berlin reports that on December 25 eight British ships entered a German bay with hydroplanes and escorts. The raid aimed at river mouths where ships lay at anchor and bombs were dropped on them.
German airships and aeroplanes attacked a British convoy, hitting two destroyers and another vessel before fire broke out. The attackers withdrew eastward as fog hindered further fighting.
