Cameron residents witness Battery C 239th Field Artillery drill nights echo 1940s era training. The unit displays a 105 mm howitzer and carries carbines machine guns pistols field telephones radios trucks and jeeps. Activated in June 1947 under Captain Rudolph Michalka the National Guard unit emphasizes readiness and equipment quality.
Officials to man county government posts will take oath on Saturday January 1. County Clerk Homer Nobours administers after qualification for the next term. Vera Fisher becomes County Treasurer. Ed Gunn returns as County Attorney. Bill Morrison moves to District Judge with retiring Judge John Watson. Four new county commissioners join the court along with Sheriff Carl Black, Assessor Walter White, and District Clerk Grady Allen. Justices of the Peace and Constables in Precinct 1 will qualify as well with Womack Brashear and Constable B F Bailey.
Milam County gin records show 20 905 bales of cotton ginned by December 1 1948 up from 21 824 by the same date in 1947. P W Davis of Cameron Com press Company provided figures to The Herald. Despite dry late season, the 1948 crop is expected to exceed earlier production estimates.
James Heffman alias Buddy Cooper was arrested in Brownwood by Sheriff Otis Shaw and held for Milam County. Heffman is accused of rifling mail sacks at the Santa Fe station in Cameron with a knife. He has seven prior penitentiary commitments.
Humble Oil and Refining Company will air the 13th Cotton Bowl from Dallas at 1 p.m. Saturday. S. M. A. faces Oregon with Kern Tips handling play by play and Alec Chesser as color analyst over a statewide network.
The residents and managers J A Cryer thank all churches groups and individuals who gave gifts and fruit during the holidays at the Milam County Home for the Aged wishing happiness and prosperity in 1949.
County attorney Bill Morrison will become Judge of the 20th Judicial District and take the oath at 3 p.m. Friday December 31 here Judge John Watson will administer the oath Morrison plans to attend a Saturday ceremony in Austin as guest of Judge Archer who becomes Chief Justice of the Third Supreme Judicial District Morrison will not be present Saturday despite friends wishing to witness the event Here Morrison will qualify on Friday and assume duties that day
The Wm. P. Carey Lumber Company announces no change in officers ownership or operation of its Texas yards in Cameron and Buckholts. The Texas yards will continue to operate under the firm name Wm. P. Carey Lumber Company, with the company as successor to Carey Lombard & Company. The Carey name has been known to the building trades since 1881.
James Bethel Adams 36 of Salado died at 6 30 p m when his car collided with a truck on Highway 81 about one mile south of Jarrell. Stephen F Frazier of San Antonio drove the truck and was not hurt seriously. Adams’ car was demolished and truck damage estimated at 300 dollars. Funeral plans not completed. Body taken to Frederick funeral home Georgetown. Deputy Sheriff Henry Matysek investigated.
Colder weather for the Cameron area was forecast for the next 24 hours with cloudy skies. Temperatures were below freezing in the Panhandle country but were due to rise by Thursday morning. No rain was forecast. The cold weather would continue through Thursday night. Indications were that the weather would remain crisp through Christmas and the weekend.
Gloria Hearne spent the holidays in Cameron with her mother Mrs. H. A. Hearne and sister Marie, sharing family time during the season.
A Chamber of Commerce survey reports holiday buying in Cameron exceeded 1947 with few retail declines. Merchants welcomed the post holiday gains and expect a longer buying period due to improving farm activity despite moisture worries. Cameron advances in 1948 include new stores, stocks, and advertising, signaling optimism and a prominent role in 1949 retail trade for farming machinery and banking services.
Texas farmers had better than average harvests in 1948 due to expanded planted acreage despite severe weather. Corn yielded above average per acre but total production fell to 44,698,000 bushels with the smallest corn harvest since 1934 and flax reaching 1,320,000 bushels. Pecan rice and other crops set records while freezes and drought reduced yields for small grains and deciduous fruits.
H. H. Coffield of Rockdale announced the purchase of three Hughes Tool Company buildings at 7700 Wallisville Road for 157000 cash. The sites total 91000 square feet on six acres and will serve warehousing distribution and manufacturing. Reed Roller Bit plant on Clinton Drive was acquired months earlier. Coffield notes Houston area expansion and aims to use the assets for diversified operations.
Rudolph Kohutek, his wife Anna Lee Robinson, and baby Sandra Kay were injured when their car was struck by a Missouri Pacific train in North Cameron at 10 a.m. Friday. Kohutek suffered a back injury, while Mrs. Robinson and the baby received cuts and bruises. Sandra Kay had a head gash and was later discharged. The crash occurred as Kohutek headed to deliver Christmas gifts near a crossing by the Hrozek grocery.
Lt Walter W Redd a Cameron Tex graduate of Texas A M was graduated this morning from the officers basic course at the Ground General school at Fort Riley Kansas Lt General Stephen J Chamberlin commanding general Fifth Army was principal speaker 281 officers were enrolled including 253 West Point graduates 2 Navy ensigns and 26 foreign students
Herschel and Charles Duncan announced a year end bonus for all plant and clerical workers at the Duncan Coffee Company Employees Annual Christmas Party. The firm now in its 30th year is the largest independent roaster in the Southwest with plants in Houston Dallas San Antonio and Corpus Christi and selling in six states. Herschel Duncan said the company has long shared earnings with staff including many who have been with the firm nearly 30 years.
