W H McCormick of Rogers says his 26 acre pasture stays green after a recent ice storm. He notes 20 bales of green grass baled in October and stored in the field for future planting. Baker Starn operates nearby and reports improved ground cover on five acres planted in September.
The Central Texas Soil and Water Conservation District selects Wilburn E. Beckhusen of west of Buckholts and Woodrow W. Rasco of Pasadena for the districts 1973 resident and absentee conservation farmer awards. Both have implemented extensive soil and land treatment to improve farming conditions and the environment.
A study committee led by Hugo Aignar examines forming a cotton ginning cooperative for farmers from Cameron Splawn Ben Arnold and Burlington. They weigh equipment land and membership choices as existing gins face harvest-time strain and a 5 to 6 month rotation. The next meeting will decide on cooperative or alternative measures.
Texas cattle producers face high feed costs as cold weather raises the use of cottonseed meal. Dr. Dennis Herd recommends substitutes such as whole cottonseed guar meal castor meal alfalfa hay and dehydrated alfalfa pellets plus dry supplements and emphasizes testing forage protein to determine supplement needs. He notes feeding limits and urges forage balance to control costs.
