Poinsettia Care For Yard Beauty
College Station reports on how to grow poinsettias outdoors in Texas. Everett Janne, Texas A&M Extension Service horticulturist, advises winter rest mid January with reduced watering in 45 to 55 degree cools, then transplant after frost danger, cut back to 3 to 6 inches, and maintain well drained soil at pH 6 to 7. Pinching tips every 4 to 6 inches promotes a bushy shape, and short days in fall trigger bract color. avoid artificial lights at night to allow blooming. protect from mealy bugs, spider mites and aphids with malathion at labeled rates to prevent leaf damage.
