Nativity Creche Art in Naples Inspires Lavish 18th Century Displays
In Naples during the late 1700s wealthy families and court members produced elaborate nativity scenes. King Carlo III spurred the fashion with royal displays, leading sculptors and lace dressed figures to create highly ornate creches. The Metropolitan Museum holds a collection from this Neapolitan tradition, famed for terracotta heads and richly dressed 12 to 18 inch figures.
