Sickness and holiday spirit mix as Oakdale residents prepare for Christmas. Local marriages licenses and auto registrations appear alongside real estate transfers and social notices from Oakdale and nearby Milano, Cameron, and Minerva communities.
J K Freeman chairman of the Cameron Democratic Executive Committee calls a Democratic primary at Cameron City Hall on December 2 1916. Voter test requires I am a white Democrat and pledge to support nominees for mayor marshal secretary assessor two aldermen city attorney and other officers to be elected in April 1916 and to elect a US Democratic Executive Committee for the city. Witness dated December 17 1915.
Milam County sends a group to the University of Texas for the current session. Among the students listed are Paula Freda Henry, Phillis Ester Henry, Ledbetter, and Angela Mondrick who are candidates for degrees and likely to graduate next June. The UT enters its 33rd session with a substantial registration.
The text notes that Texas has the largest university registration in the South, with about 1200 students taking correspondence work, and states the end of the session will exceed 2800.
Father Heckman, long at Temple, received a bishop’s letter offering the Palestine pastorate with a transfer option. He declined to move, choosing to stay in Temple where he has served nearly a quarter century. The decision pleases his many Temple friends and aligns with local church plans.
Rev Hardman rector of All Saints Episcopal praises last week's Herald edition as a mammoth Christmas issue. He notes its size and fine typographical appearance for Cameron and commends printers from office staff to A V Smith for managing editor credit.
In Jones Prairie a social night for area teachers was hosted by Miss Sadie Lee Bailey. Attendees included Ollie Black Steve Hearn Nora McKinney Irene Gilliland Tom Tuttle and Jos W Bickley. The event featured contests and humor about school life with a roses and ferns decorated dining room and hot chocolate refreshment.
All Saints Episcopal invites parishioners to Christmas Day service at 10 30 a m Holy Communion and sermon with all communicants expected. A cordial welcome extends to all. Sunday services include morning prayer and? L u day. Rev Dr Hardman Rector.
Misees Bulla and Allie Ashley of Hanover were seen in Cameron on Monday. The pair are among the most popular in their area and have many friends in Cameron.
The Cameron Hearth Christmas edition, 56 pages, well illustrated, features Milam county history and commerce. The Temple Mirror commends the publication as one of Texas area weekly newspaper’s biggest stunts and congratulates Cameron on its splendid addition.
A letter from Southwestern Paper Co of Dallas dated December 21 1915 congratulates H B Terrell editor of The Cameron Herald Cameron Texas on a fine Christmas edition. The note praises Camer on Milam County readers and the energy shown in producing the issue.
The Presbyterian Missionary Society gathered Monday afternoon with Mrs. Robert McLane presiding. Mrs. W. A. Gillon led the session as members studied Missions in Cuba.
Washington reports indicate supporters of former Texas Senator J W Bailey may push him into the 1916 race if Senator Culberson declines to run. Bailey has said he will not seek re election, but Washington chatter links him with potential opposition to Senator Sheppard and possible anti prohibition vote considerations.
Secretary Lansing announced the second American note to Austria on the sinking of the Ancona had gone forward and should reach Vienna tomorrow night. The note reiterates American demands as a final statement with a firm tone and aligns with Austria’s own version of the incident. Twelve Americans were aboard. three are known to survive.
Mesdames Paschal Rice Black and Fontaine formed a committee to purchase presents for the Jones Prairie Christmas Tree while in town. They sought well chosen items from Cameron merchants highlighting the season’s opportunities.
