The Naco siege in Sonora and cross border gunfire into Naco Arizona continued. Two Americans, F H Kuck and Jose Martinez, were struck by shrapnel with Kuck hurt and Martinez uninjured. Maytorena plans a final attack while Hill strengthens defenses and border patrol under Brigadier General Tasker Bliss readies for action.
Mr. Andrew Helm, sergeant, Cameron on Monday to arrange transfer of boys from the convict farm to the public roads. He will supervise the roads and endure humane treatment for the boys, as on the farm, a choice by the Commissioners praised by The Herald.
Comtroller Elect H. Terrell and companions camped on the Frio eight miles north of town. They killed seven bucks and other game. Terrell praised the area and hinted at a future return. The party included Alyta Terrell, Houston Terrell, Eula Hurlock, W. E. Elliot, and E. W. Walker, from Fort Worth and Austin.
Jean Smith of Rogers has shown the Carnegie Hero Medal earned in 1910 for attempting to rescue two workmen from suffocation. The medal bears Andrew Carnegie’s likeness and the inscription honoring A Eugene Smith for risking his life at a Rogers well in Aug 1909.
Dallas today reports a conference date will be set soon for Austin involving Colonel Harvie Jordan of the Southern Cotton Association and Texas division members with Ed Kane’s committee. The aim is to promote cooperative cotton sales to raise prices and reduce next year’s acreage. Jordan plans South Carolina organization next, followed by Alabama.
The Department of Agronomy at A and M College warns farmers that rain runoff wastes thousands of dollars in barnyard manure. Keep manure under covered sheds, moist, and unchecked by heat. Do not mix lime with manure as it wastes nitrogen. save manure and buy less fertilizer. Passersby admire bay windows decorated for Christmas.
Houston officials report $19,000 of a $25,000 state fund raised with $3,000 promised, enabling plans to locate and begin building the delinquent girls training school as soon as January. The board of control and finance committee, including Patrick Henry and Judge Q. D. Corley, oversee the drive. Contributions come from counties, Fort Worth, Houston, and individuals, with donations totaling $11,000 local and $7,500 from other groups.
Council met with all members present except Attorney Baskin and approved routine business. Godley outlined steps for cheaper insurance, a Water Co. improvement committee was formed, and Seth Duncan sought park area protection from washing. Street committee to report next meeting as accounts and tax totals were noted.
Washington reports the 135 million dollar cotton loan fund was unanimously approved by representatives of Southern State committees. The group held an all day conference with the cotton loan committee, aims to place funds with cotton producers, and expects thousands of loan applications before January 1. Officials foresee 4 to 5 million bales carried over and note potential credit expansion in the South to aid producers.
