Goodfellows Plan Cheer for City's Poor Children

Swift Praised for Generous Toy Matinee Gesture

Swift's generous staging of a toy matinee last Saturday drew praise from Goodfellows and social workers. The Shirley Temple show "Stowaway" drew a full house of children, but many toys donated for admission fees were too small for distribution on Christmas Eve. Swift, who organizes the annual event, ensured theater heating stayed on the prior night to keep temperatures comfortable for the kids. The matinee was a success despite toy size issues.

H C Meyer Hurt in East Texas Wreck

H C Meyer of Rockdale a member of the Texas Board of Control was seriously injured in a Sunday car overturn on the Henderson to Arp highway in the East Texas oil field. He was returning from visiting his son Bruce Meyer in East Texas and was alone. In a Jacksonville hospital his legs were broken and other injuries reported though he is expected to recover. Meyer, past 70, was Rockdale’s longtime dollar a year mayor and was appointed to the Board of Control by Mrs Ferguson in her second term.

Unk Young Injured in Houston Motorcycle Crash

Unk Young, famed Yee High athlete and Texas Highway Patrol member, was injured when his motorcycle collided with a car on the San Antonio road in Houston. He suffered a broken leg and knee cap, plus a broken finger, and will be confined to hospital for months as sister Callie Young arrived in Houston.

THREE DIE AS TRUCK CRASHES WAGON NEAR ROCKDALE

A truck driven by Alton Jenkins for Rebel Junk Company of Waco crashed a wagon on the highway near Rockdale on Monday afternoon killing two women Paula Tovar 71 and Frances Tovar 28 and a three month old child. Three boys Ricardo Paul and Rodolfo suffered skull fractures and broken bones and were treated in Cameron. No charges were filed as the crash was deemed unavoidable.

All District Team Named with Seven Belton Men on List

Cameron places two on the all district team as seven Belton men are listed. Clifford Guess at guard and Harry Hughes in the backfield were the only other Cameron players to receive official votes for a place on the all conference team.

Newton to Seek Second Term in Texas Senate

Dr. W. R. Newton state senator for District 13 announced on Tuesday he will run for a second term in the Texas Senate. He spends time at Cameron Hospital, which he founded in 1915, while the Senate is not in session. He was first elected in 1936 and will seek reelection in 1940.
