Texas cotton crop hits 5.9 million bales in 1949
The Agriculture Department pegs Texas 1949 cotton production at 5,900,000 bales, about a third of the national 16,034,000 bale total. Texas yield runs 264 pounds per acre on 10,725,000 acres, with a record crop aided by favorable weather. A 1950 production quota backs a 20 percent reduction, while PMA officials report farmer hardship under the new allotment plan and await House committee action in Washington.

Growers Seek Relief From Cotton Quota Law
An official in Washington admits the 1950 cotton quota law creates inequities in some counties and urges congressional action for relief. South Texas farmers file suit to challenge the quotas. Texas congressmen promise to press for corrections when Congress reconvenes. Milam County quota stands at 64 000 acres, about 10 000 less than 1947 1948 levels.

Self Defense Plea Raised in Smithwick Court Fight
Attorneys for Sam Smithwick argued in the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals that he acted in self defense when he shot W. H. Mason in Alice. They asked bail pending his December trial, opposing by state prosecutors who highlighted Saenz testimony that Mason touched Smithwick’s hands or gun before the shot. Mason, a 51 year old radio critic, was killed July 29 after accusing Smithwick’s property of hosting prostitution.

Defense argues gun was involved before shooting in Smithwick case
In the Cameron Herald report from December 15 1949 attorney Byron Skelton of Temple urged focus on Saenz’s account before the shot. He suggested Mason may have held the gun when Smithwick was shot as Judge Hawkins pressed questions about self defense. A ruling on the appeal is expected next Wednesday and Smithwick’s murder trial will be moved to Bell County.
