Paving Delayed For Downtown Renewal Project

Urban renewal paving for downtown streets is postponed to December 26 after merchants urged a delay. Bandas Co. of Temple will wait as asphalt supply limits risk the project, while the mayor notes the original March 8 completion date leaves eight weeks for finishing after the two week delay.

Milam RC&D Board Elects Local Leaders for Six-County Project

United Fund Drive Begins in Cameron

Cameron launches its United Fund drive with business outreach and a house to house effort to follow. Agencies funded include Cameron Day Care Center 1000, Community Center 100, Boy Scouts 2000, USD 100, Salvation Army 2075, Red Cross 2075, Little League 600, and Central Texas Council on Alcoholism 150, totaling 8100. Girl Scouts funds were dropped due to no local units.

Milam County Proposes Home Management Service for Elderly

A pilot program called Milam County Home Management Service aims to assist residents 65 and over. Milam was chosen by the Central Texas Council of Governments due to an aging population. A project representative will visit homes to aid recuperating or health‑challenged seniors, with volunteers assisting. Kindergarten Pre-registration at Ben Milam School

Pre-registration for second semester kindergarten takes place at Ben Milam Elementary on December 18 and 19 from 8 a.m. to 3 30 p.m. Eligible children are five years old with birth dates on or after March 1, 1968. Bring a birth certificate and current immunization record. those already pre registered or who have attended kindergarten do not need to preregister.

Cameron School Board Considers Energy Saving Plan

The Cameron school board weighs a statewide energy saving plan with goals to cut gas and electricity usage by about 15 percent. Discussion covers thermostat use, shorter school days, potential closures, and a mandated plan to the Texas Education Agency while addressing cooling, lighting, and boiler controls.

Milam County Awards Insurance Bid In Regular Meeting

Milam County Commissioners awarded the auto liability general liability and workers compensation coverage to Employees Casualty Co of Austin on a low bid of 10157. Other bids came from Southwest Assurance Co of Austin 14767 Camp Insurance of Cameron 12925 and Mamie Hefley Insurance of Cameron 24531. The board met after bids and discussed wolf problems prompting talk of a bounty system. Judge O B Harden noted many calls about wolves and described trapping difficulties since cyanide bombs were banned. The county spends 275 monthly for wolf trapping. trapping wolves with dogs disturbs cattle farmers. Local attorney Don Humble and Hugh Stewart of Houston sought a road to Stewart's property south of Milano via condemnation. Stewart plans retirement property and offered to cover related construction costs.
