Argument Begun in Wesley Stevens Case

The Wesley Stevens assault with intent to murder case is expected to finish this afternoon with a jury decision at nightfall. Evidence completed Wednesday and the judge prepared the charge. The case stems from a liquor raid by Sheriff Rogers and deputies. Stevens is charged with shooting Deputy Little. Brashear also faces liquor manufacturing charges.

Knights of Pythias Namie Elects Albert Collins Leader

Albert Collins was elected Chancellor Commander of the Knights of Pythias in Cameron the youngest in lodge history. Robert D. Wharton became Vice Chancellor with officers appointed for the coming term in Castle Hall. Judge W. G. Gillis retained Prelate for an eight year run, Fred Henry reappointed keeper of records and seals, and other officers named including L A Dusek Master of Work R A Tries Master of Exchecker Lee R. Clore Master at Arms and H L Heath Outer Guard. Installation planned next Monday night or soon after.

Paving Contract Signed and Groundwork Begins

Ww. E. Dozier of Austin has crews on the ground to start street work. The initial task is a storm sewer from the First National Bank to the light power plant, followed by curb and gutter work before paving is laid. City council authorizes warrants to cover the pay.

New City Insurance Rates Expected Following Credits

The State Fire Insurance Commission will apply new credits to Cameron’s city rate on post date insurance. Credits for water mains and street paying will reduce premiums by about seven to eight thousand dollars annually. Agents must file 1921 29 and 23 premiums and losses to finalize the record of the past three years.

City paving to proceed without delay in Cameron

Warrants have been purchased by banks in Cameron and will be retired with bonds with the city retaining that option. Paving work will begin immediately with no further delay.

Thomas Drug Store Robbery In Cameron Stuns Town

Up to noon Thursday no trace had been found of thieves who robbed the Geo. A. Thomas & Sons Drug Store of jewelry valued at 2500. Bennie Casey, among 18 convicts who escaped Kansas penitentiary, was later linked to possible clues. Authorities traced jewelry to Texarkana and questioned several suspects as Cameron officials tightened patrols.

Negro agricultural leaders meet to discuss county farming problems

An Institute meeting for Milam County Negro farmers gathered at Cameron Grove church with broad turnout despite bad roads and weather. Speakers, including Judge Gillis and Prof. C. H. Waller, emphasized home economy, co operation, and investment in registered livestock and diversified crops.

A man detained in Cameron is held in connection with the Acme Steam Laundry safe robbery. He was arrested in Milano after a pistol fight with deputies. a bottle of alcohol was found in his suitcase. Linked to Cameron at 2 am robbery time, two other suspects are jailed and linked to broader mail pouch thefts in the region.

Road tax hike to fund county maintenance and state takeovers

The county debates a proposed increase in the road maintenance tax from 4 to 15 cents, yielding 11 cents more. Backed by the good roads committee, it argues for funds as the State Highway Department will take over several highways on January 1 1924, freeing county funds for other roads while ensuring repairs and grading of dirt roads.
