Vertical Integration in Texas Agriculture Grains
A new leaflet from the Texas Agricultural Experiment Station Extension Service analyzes wheat and feed grains integration in Texas. It notes long standing local to mill operations, with large elevators and mills tied to national firms, while grain producers see limited integration especially on contracts for seed and grain sorghum.

Prospects Improve for Hog Markets as Farrowing Slips
Analysts expect better hog market prospects if December 1950 through February 1960 farrowing intentions fall four percent from the prior year in the 10 Corn Belt states. If follow through shows a decline in March through May 1960, hog numbers may turn downward, signaling price gains, say Lloyd Bergsma and John McHaney. The June through November period shows 5 percent more farrowing plans than 1958, and 23 percent above the 1948-57 average.

Fall Hog-Corn Ratio Impacts 1959 Slaughter Outlook
The hog to corn ratio at about 11.5 marks the lowest fall breeding season since 1955 when it reached 11.4. Analysts expect the ratio’s effect on farrowing intentions and hog numbers to be offset by abundant feed grains and lower prices. Hog slaughter through nine months 1959 rose 14 percent from 1958, with the last quarter’s output tied to the March May pig crop up 9 percent. A larger fall pig crop in 1959 suggests high slaughter in early 1960.
