Cameron to close Food Stamp Office in Milam County

Cameron loses the Food Stamp administration effective January 4 with all local employees to be terminated by February 1. Judge Jeff T. Kemp announced commissioners court action to discontinue county expenses and join other counties by mailing stamps from Dallas. State welfare workers will certify recipients as usual, with a county-wide plan managed by selected judges and a chosen manager.

Registrants Deferred From December Draft Call

Public notice states few registrants will be deferred from the December draft call due to age limit changes. Induction orders will be mailed soon. The age change will require pulling entrants from lower categories. however the President’s order banning voluntary enlistment keeps all teen draftees available for conscription.

Car Theft Cleared by Arrest In Lifelong Escapee Case

Sheriff Walter White reports Wm. Henry Bonds, 24, a life-term inmate who escaped from Atascosa County prison, is jailed in Pampa for a Hefley-Stedman Motor Co theft. The Ford Coupe owner Oxsheer Smith of Citizens National Bank sees the car returned. tires were swapped and sold pieces traced to Belton, with more tires possibly in Leveland or Pampa. Federal charges loom. Rangers made the arrest.

Dairy Herd Cows Sold Here in Cameron County

Cameron benefited from the Chamberlain Dairy herd sold Monday by R. G. Grabein who bought the cattle for resale to residents. About 30 cows were already sold with most going to Cameron buyers and the rest remaining within the county for local milk needs.

Marak School District Votes to Increase Taxes

The Marak School District approved a tax increase from 25 cents to 66 cents by a 17 to 0 vote last Saturday to qualify for state aid. The levy funds teacher salaries transportation and high school tuition. turnout was small due to no prior publicity. The community generally favors the increase.

Cameron hit by ice delivery discrimination across towns

Cameron residents face ice shortages as Grady Little warns of delivery limits near summer. Oxsheer Smith of Citizens National Bank led a Milam County effort on Pearl Harbor Day selling war bonds. Local banks and investors bought 120506 of securities with Texas Power and Light and Community Public Service each at 10200, plus a minor’s estate purchase of 16000. Four Men Escape Jail Here Tuesday Night

In the worst jail break in years four men escaped from Cameron jail Tuesday night and are at large. They are Charles Wilkerson Arthur Haynes Milton Cook and Walter Stillwell. Two cars were stolen one in Cameron and one in Rockdale. The Cameron Ford Sedan belonged to Dr. W. R. Newton and the Rockdale Chevrolet belonged to Boswell Newton. Haynes and Wilkerson were jailed for burglary at the Cameron Theatre last week and confessed. Milton Cook from Town was shot during a robbery at a Magnolia Service Station in Thorndale and arrested near San Gabriel. Walter Stillwell is a soldier absent without leave from Arizona. The escape prompted police chase and jail repairs in Cameron.

Correction On Finding Of Rifles In Grady Houston Home

Sam Hohenstein and Mrs Hohenstein seek clarification of a Tuesday report about a rifle found under the Grady Houston home. Deputy Sheriff Carl Black provided the story but did not confirm an arrest, though a painter is reported to have been taken into custody for placing the gun while painting this summer.

Lieut John Watson Visits Cameron After Training

Lieut John B Watson son of Judge and Mrs John Watson of Cameron arrived Saturday for a few days visit with his parents. He has completed twelve weeks training at the Art General's Office Training School at Fort Washington near Washington D C and will return there to receive his commission.
