A ceremony to unveil the Port Sullivan Centennial marker honoring Milam county pioneers is set for Sunday at 2 p.m. December 6. Program includes a welcome by Centennial Board, songs by Branchville Port Sullivan schools, Cameron High Band, readings by descendants, principal address by Hon T S Henderson, and talks by local longtime residents.
Dick Todd, a Milam County native and Cameron cousin of Mrs. Jesse James, rose to fame as a sophomore back for the Texas Aggies. Born near Thorndale, his family moved to Crowell where he began his football career as a boy.
Old Santa Claus, in person, will visit Cameron Friday afternoon with candy and entertainment for all ages. His troupe includes Toto and Laffo the clowns, Jumbo the elephant, and a real tiger. He will be signing autographs and taking letters about 3 o clock under the Chamber of Commerce auspices.
J J Kirk a Milam county farmer died Sunday morning at 1 40 in a local hospital from pneumonia at age 71. Funeral services were held Monday at his son Jesse Kirk's home in Cameron with ministers from Rosebud and Cameron officiating. Burial followed in Liberty cemetery. Surviving are eleven children, thirty eight grandchildren, and three great grandchildren. His wife Addie preceded him in death and two sons, Bob and Charley, also died. He was a member of the First Methodist Church in Cameron and the Woodmen of the World.
Milam county's oldest resident Mrs Martha Smith died at her Salty Creek home near Rockdale aged 99. She was born in Grimes county. Her father William Walker was Milam's first judge.
Dave McLane special officer and night watchman at the Robert McLane Company was accidentally shot in the right leg below the knee when his gun dropped from its holster as he built a fire in the Schiller Motor Company office. The wound is serious but the prognosis is for recovery without amputation. Mrs Georgie Stephens state health nurse was Cameron visiting county nurse Miss Pearl Fulerod this week.
A correction notes that Eddie Bryant and spouse suffered a total loss from the Mnerva house fire. No insurance was carried, contrary to a prior report of partial coverage.
Dr J C Herring 75 longtime Milam County physician and Burlington postmaster died of a heart stroke Monday in Cameron after being moved from Burlington. Born in Woodville Texas he practiced medicine 22 years and leaves a widow and children including Carlton Herring of New York and Mrs Joe Marek of Abilene. Funeral services were held Wednesday at Little River Church with burial in Cameron authorities.
C W Bradbury announces a December clearance starting Friday December 4th to clear fall stock for holiday arrivals. The Cameron store has sold quality merchandise for 16 years and emphasizes high savings on items not easily replaced in wholesale markets. The sale aims to clear stock without compromising the store’s reputation.
Three year old Joan Belk in Davenport suffers from osteosclerosis congenita turning her body to stone with both legs paralyzed and near blindness. Doctors offer no effective treatment or hope to halt the disease.
John Davis a Houston business college student spent Thanksgiving with his parents Mr and Mrs Judd Davis.
Cameron fans prepare for a 70 mile trip to Mart as the Yeomen face the District 256 B champions in a bi district game. The game is set for 7 30 p m with Temple inviting the teams to play. Jimmie Stewart returns from mumps and the squad trains hard.
Leland Green announces the Leland Green Funeral Home will move to the former Max Collins tailoring building. Extensive remodeling converts space for a giant hardware stock display and a new chapel. A churchlike funeral service chapel will be built with embalming and stock rooms in the west end.
Miss Dorothy Bellows sought $1,000 damages after a collision that her claim alleges resulted from a refusal of a kiss and a poke in the ribs by John Mucha during a ride. The incident led to the car hitting a tree and injuries to Bellows.
