Rome reports Italy formally declares war on Germany amid years of drift toward conflict. Italy had withdrawn from the triple alliance last May and sent troops to Salonika to support the Entente, with Germany directing opposing forces on the Macedonian front.
National guard troops from Ohio Kentucky and Vermont in mobilization camps are ordered to the Mexican border. About 12 000 men move immediately with six Ohio regiments three from Kentucky and two from Vermont plus auxiliaries. The suspension on other states remains in effect and no formal reason was given.
Dallas, Texas August 28 O B Colquitt defeated candidate for United States senator declares he is not out of politics and will bide his time. He will make Dallas his home for now and plans for the future are not yet announced.
V P Wooley of Cameron arrived Tuesday for business with the Thorndale Oil Mill. He is connected with the Cameron Oil Mill, both owned by R L Batte, Thorndale.
State Superintendent W F Doughty issues a bulletin detailing compulsory school law effective Sept 1 1916. Children eight to fourteen must attend public school at least sixty days the first year then eighty days and a minimum of 100 days thereafter, with several exemptions including private schooling and physical or mental impairment. The act also provides free textbooks, prohibits school hour employment, and outlines penalties for delinquent parents and bonding for incorrigible children.
The Yoakum fair marks Texas Day German Day Yoakum Day and Editors Day on October 4 with a banquet honoring Gov. James E Ferguson. Lavacca and DeWitt counties provide fair products and Gov Ferguson will attend the event.
In the Saturday run off Senator Chas A Culberson defeated former Governor Colquitt by about 70 000 statewide and in this county long a Colquitt stronghold. Culberson led by several hundred votes in Cameron with a turnout just over 400.
President Wilson decided to appear before Congress to urge legislation to avert or halt the nationwide railroad strike. He will outline talks thus far and a definite legislative program after a White House meeting with eight railroad presidents and four union heads. The executives proposed a three to four month neutral inquiry with arbitration or a strike option at the end. The strike order for 400000 workers on Labor Day was rejected, leaving the path to congressional action uncertain but the President remains hopeful.
Austin Texas August 16 The attorney general's department held that leaving money with another person who then orders beer and whiskey from a wet town to deliver to the donor constitutes soliciting orders in a dry territory and a sale under the Allison liquor law It also incurs a $500 cold storage tax and violates the disorderly house statute.
Notice to readers announces September 1 delinquent payments of one dollar in advance. Circulation Manager Adeline Caldwell explains leniency and fairness. It also states a new October 1 rate of 1.75 dollars for the Herald and Dallas Semi-Weekly News with renewal savings of 25 cents before that date.
Miss Lalla Meyers opens a new millinery shop in the Law Sprinker Building offering an up to date line of hats and expert trims.
Washington reports Senator Culberson issued a signed statement praising his senate nomination as a strong endorsement for national democracy. Texans hailed Culberson over Colquitt as a Wilson victory while telegrams to the White House echoed support. Congressmen Gar- ner and others sent congratulatory messages as Tumulty reviewed returns from Dallas.
The Wesley Bible Class met with Mrs. J. R. Young on August 24, led by class president Mrs. J. D. Hefley. Special music came from guests Miss Lorena Ruby and Ruth Wagnon, with punch served by Miss Allen Ruby and Miss Virginia Lightfoot of Tennessee.
Mrs. Tom Denson spent most of last week visiting friends in Ben Arnold, staying with acquaintances and catching up with local residents during the stay.
