Bert Nicholson Rites Tuesday

Bert Nicholson 62 was found dead Monday morning from natural causes. Inquest verdict by Justice of the Peace B G Rice. Funeral services Tuesday at 2 pm at First Christian Church officiated by Rev Kenneth Haley. Burial in Oak Hill Cemetery. He was born in Louisiana and lived in Cameron years. Survived by wife, daughter Joyce of Dallas, six brothers, four sisters and many in community groups. Funeral arrangements by Marek Burns.

Cameron School Board Proposes 543150 Budget

The Cameron School Board announced a proposed 543150 budget for 1962 63 and accepted the resignation of veteran member F W Vogelsang. The board also added four teachers to the 1962 63 roster and accepted resignations from two others.

Cameron Firemen Hear Cayce Moore at BBQ and School Notices

About 150 Cameron volunteers and guests attended the Cameron Fire Department barbecue with Cayce Moore delivering humor on modern life. Frank Richter Sr. received a 40 year service gift from Fire Chief Carl Black. The Marak School opens Sept 3 for registration, with classes starting Sept 4. Superintendent Ben Milam School hosts a public budget hearing Aug 31 at 8 p.m. Vogelsang resigns to allow Frances Wise to apply for a Cameron School System post. Resignations include Roy Hensley and Theta C. Edmond. The 1962-63 budget is about 12 500 lower than last year’s 555 644 due to no building funds this year.

Milam County Roads Plan Gains Momentum in 1963

Cameron Chamber and Milam County boosters announced $1.77 million in new roads for 1963 with contracts totaling $1.047 million to be completed by 1962 end. District engineer C B Thames spoke at a good roads barbecue, outlining US 77 reconstruction, a new 9.8 mile segment, and Farm Road expansions linking Liberty Milano Rochdale and Thorndale with US 79 and SH 36 improvements.

Alcoa Strike Averted By Union Officials

The Cameron Chamber of Commerce Trade Development Committee invites Milam County children to a free movie on September 1 with showings at 10 am, noon, 2 pm, and 4 pm. Sixteen Cameron merchants sponsor the event aligned with back to school shopping. Parents must accompany children to receive tickets and register with name and ticket numbers at participating stores.

Rockdale Alcoa strike called off amid remodeling plan

United Steel Workers officials withdrew a 72 hour strike notice at Rockdale’s Alcoa plant after union members earlier voted to strike. Management praised the decision as work continues to remodel equipment and restore full operation while diverting manpower to the effort.

Ben Franklin Variety Store Reopens in Cameron

Paul Nabours of Cameron reopened the Ben Franklin Variety Store in downtown Cameron after purchasing it from Narvie Caperton in June. Remodeling included new fixtures lighting air conditioning and checkout equipment with a single entrance. Butler Brothers guided the redesign based on merchandise and buying habits. Grand re opening runs today through Saturday with specials.

Production at Mack Production Company's Milam County Well

Production at the Mack Production Company's shallow test in Milam County began after drilling to 1221 feet. A late week producer was brought in and pipe and cementing were completed, with a test to determine production set for Thursday or Friday. The Terry and Terry lease covers 224 acres near Griffin Chapel, nine miles southeast of Cameron, adjoining TP&L and Cavis tracts where several shallow wells have recently been brought in.

Pet Parade Set For Friday At Town Show

Five dollars in prize money will be the high point of the pet show sponsored by the Trade Development committee of the Chamber of Commerce. Any kind of animal is eligible. Line up time is 9:15 Friday near the Fire Department. Prizes will go to Most Well Behaved Vet Best Dressed Vet Most Unusual Pet and The Pet that Demonstrates the Best Trick.

Truck-Train Crash Kills Rockdalian Worker

Milton Ray Starr of Rockdale was killed when his 1957 Mack truck collided with the Santa Fe Texas Chief at Pettibone crossing near Rockdale at 1:33 am last Thursday. The cab was torn off and the wreckage was hurled across fields. the empty ice trailer remained upright. Highway Patrolman Wynn Williams said the truck skidded 27 feet before impact as debris scattered along the tracks. The damaged diesel locomotive was part of the engine unit on the train.

Registration For Students Friday

A clean up registration will be held at Yee High School Friday pm for seniors through freshmen who have not registered. Damaged with the cowcatcher bent onto the rails the train had to be pried loose before it could proceed. The engineer was K R Vaughan of Temple and the conductor T Reynolds. The victim was a longtime Rockdale resident employed by H H Coffield Co. Funeral services were held Saturday at Rockdale.

Final Plans Reviewed SOS Drive For Polio Vaccine

Final plans for the North Milam SOS drive were set as the Milam Medical Society and Milam Health unit met. Centers in Cameron and nearby towns will offer Sabin oral vaccine September 9 from noon to 5 p m with registration, traffic, and volunteer support arranged.
