This column by J. B. White acknowledges editor Cooke of the Rockdale Reporter and jokes about golf versus politics. It praises public water utilities, noting Cameron’s water supply improvements and the Texas Water Utilities' sanitary, modern methods and planned expansions.
In 1921 a settlement with the existing corporation improved supply handling. the journal criticized it as inadequate for sanitation but acknowledged notable improvement. It urged filtration and doubted the sedimentation system's adequacy, while noting state health board concurrence. The current system is judged as good as possible for its kind.
The piece emphasizes filtration as the only absolute sanitary method for Cameron and other Texas cities water supplies. It notes sedimentation with chemical treatment kills germs but cannot remove dead matter, while filtration plus chemicals yields very pure water, and urges installing a filtering plant as the best welfare measure.
Mr and Mrs Albert Rinh traveled to Cameron on Sunday to visit their son Albert Jr in Cameron hospital. The report notes the family’s visit and Harold Albert Rinh’s status remains under care.
Governor Alfred E. Smith accepted the Democratic nomination in Albany pledging honest government, real prosperity, and sound tariff reform. He called for farm relief, anti corruption in prohibition enforcement, and a constructive government focused on the people. He criticized Republican prosperity claims and urged a practical plan to control surplus crops after election.
Up to noon Thursday 1000 bales of new crop cotton were received and marketed, totaling 4000 bales for the crop. Receipts lag last year but movement remains steady. Farmers sell quickly and prices in Cameron are the best in the region as buyers offer top rates.
Tom Connally won Milam County by a near three to one margin over Earle Mayfield in a Saturday election. Barry Miller led the ticket. Thomas B. Love appeared on the ballot with 389 votes, while Miller polled 1921. Mayfield's Cameron total was 124, far below his July primary.
Plans are under way for another Style Show at Yoe High School in Cameron on Friday September 7. Mrs A B Guinn oversees preparations with merchants showing keen interest. Cameron residents will enjoy an evening of beauty with good music as the event aims to surpass the prior successful show.
The Al G Barnes Big 5 Ring Circus performs in Chimeron this Saturday for two shows in white canvas tents. Features include an aerial ballet with 100-plus performers, daring high wire stunts, dancing horses, world class riding acts, jungle beasts, and dazzling electrical effects. Reserved seats at Mondrik Lots and Palace of Sweets offer grandstand seats on circus day.
Mrs. R. Asberry and her young daughter Laura Joe from Cisco stayed as hotel guests of her mother Ms Lauren Jones and sister Mrs L Turner.
H. G. Kenney pastor of First Presbyterian Cameron has withdrawn his resignation after a largely supportive petition from over a hundred members. The session received the letter withdrawing the resignation and Kenney will remain in Cameron amid backing for his modern theology and ministry.
Milam County Democrats appoint Giles L. Avrient as county chairman and plan a vigorous canvass with sub chairmen in each precinct. Donations go to John H. Kirby in Houston and then to New York in original form. Kirby chairs Texas finance efforts and donor names will be published locally. Immediate response urged to avoid personal calls.
Billy Wallace son of Mr and Mrs Kk A Wallace returns home from Paris after a year abroad where he completed high school work at Chateau de Bures St Germain near Paris. He will leave Cameron September 20 for Rice Institute Houston. He traveled with his sister who studies in a Paris art studio.
Independence Texas hosts its annual homecoming on Sunday September 2 inviting many travelers from Cameroon. The event honors the town’s past glories and honors descendants of the colony with a celebration recalling a 1927 Dallas News article by Mary Lake Henderson.
Cameron moves toward a cheese factory with C W Whe as president providing 70 percent stock. The Commercial Club to raise 30 percent and sell 1000 dollars to farmers. Stock sale target set for October 1 with factory operational by October 1. A Jersey Cattle Club idea is also proposed with a committee formed.
Edwin York of Hubert Hefley Motor Company returned from Houston Wednesday night with two new Ford cars. A tudor sedan went to Paul Emke of Cameron and a Fordor sedan to W A Kubecka of Buckholts. This brings Hefley’s Milam County deliveries to 40 cars.
The Cameron Public Schools announce the faculty for the 1928 29 session. Senior staff includes Superintendent T. A. Fisher and Principal L. V. Perkins along with teachers in Mathematics English History Science and Latin. Elementary and Negro School sections list numerous instructors and the principal for each division.
Miss Ivy Armstrong of the Cameron School starts a ten day pre-school program for city children at City Park. Thirty children attended the first session and the class will meet each afternoon at five. The program is open to all city kids and aims to include games and cultural exercises.
