Cameron plans a cultural festival drawing hundreds as committees form. Organizers include Mrs. Perry Holder and Miss Mildred Thornton with Cameron Chamber and local civic groups chairing early planning, plus parade and dance acts.
The Central Texas Red Cross Bloodmobile visits Cameron Methodist Fellowship Hall on Tuesday August 2 from 1 to 7 pm. Donors receive three door prizes after two hours, with prizes donated by Dusek's New Cameron and Schiller pharmacies. A goal of 71 units is planned as the Cameron event aids the Wells County Blood Center amid shortages.
Cameron Public School System opens registration for new students in grades 2 through 5 starting Monday August 2 in the Ada Henderson principal’s office. Students must present a certificate of final vaccination within the last five years or face enrollment delays. Junior high preregistration is not held. Cameron Junior High will register students September 2. High school deadlines run to August 29 for class registration and schedules. First graders register on Tuesday August 19.
Milam County Commissioners Court will hold a public hearing on the 1970 county budget Friday August 29 from 9 until am in the Commissioners Courtroom.
Cameron school name debate triggers two meetings as 16 merchants and citizens press the board. Albert White seeks principal post while Ada Henderson and Ben Milam names resist change. Board plans to reconsider after another Friday session amid dress length policy discussions.
September payments increase for 1,609 aged blind and disabled residents following a constitutional amendment. A new hunger relief program starts September 1 in Milam County, funded by a $174 emergency grant to support medical services and extra food.

The Milano School Board will convene Thursday August 21 in the superintendent’s office to review the 1969 70 budget and open bids for gasoline groceries and other items.
Drought scorches tinder dry pastures in Milam County with fires in Sharp Jones Prairie and Marlow. Lightning hit a Sharp power line causing a blaze that endangered five homes. Volunteers from Cameron and nearby units battled 190 acres of Sneed ranch grass and four unoccupied tenant houses for three hours. unknown causes for several fires amid rain and shifting winds.
A new Rose No 1 Ray Woods wildcat is planned on a 169 acre Milam County lease about 3.5 miles east of Milano. The Glen Rose Sligo test targets the Glen Rose formation at an estimated depth of 3590 feet with Edwards Lime as prior objectives in the region.
The Cameron Public Library hosts a summer program for preschool through fourth grade children. Story Hour runs each Thursday through August from 1 to 1 14 am, providing weekly readings and activities for young readers.
Cameron Independent School District adopts a $708 405 budget excluding federal sources with $114 000 in Title funds to be added. Supt PD R Dodson notes small additional sums for Titles II through V and a 10 percent drop in Title I. Total state sources reach $520 500 and total expenses balance with income. Last year’s budget was $758 872.
Mrs. Grace Stella Jones, 73, of Ben Arnold, died at a hospital Thursday morning. Born July 7, 189%, in Hope Arkansas, she was buried in Ben Arnold Cemetery after funeral rites at Marek-Burns Funeral Chapel. Survivors include husband Robert Jones, five sons and three daughters, plus two stepsons, one brother Hiram Payne, and many grandchildren. Pallbearers listed.
Immigration officers this week rounded up Mexican citizens in the United States. Sheriff Carl Black said 10 "wetbacks" were held in Milam County jail. A bus would transport them to Brownsville after extensive pickups in central Texas.
