Preston White Named To Succeed Joe Hawkins As B Team Coach
Preston White is named to coach the Cameron Public Schools B and C teams, succeeding Joe Hawkins who left for Liberty High School’s A team. White, former Thorndale coach (1947–1950), comes from Nacogdoches with a B.A. from Stephen F. Austin College. He joins the Ada Henderson faculty and begins duties Monday August 23 as football training for A and B squads starts.

Early Morning Blaze Destroys Marek Home Near Cameron
An early fire heavily damaged the Hubert Marek residence outside Cameron as the Cameron Fire Department responded at about 3 a.m. The house was gutted, all furnishings lost, and the Mareks were away on a fishing trip with two children missing as of 10:30 a.m. The fire origin was unknown and the home lay between Airport Cafe and Cameron Modern Courts on Highway 77. Estimated loss stood around $8,500.

Slugging robbery near Gause targets Hearne driver
Calvin Foster of Hearne drives a Rockdale bound oil truck when a woman flagged him near the Brazos River bridge two miles east of Gause. She asked for help starting a car, a man lying in the back seat struck Foster, they bound him with wire and stuffed his mouth with cotton, stealing $60 before fleeing in a 1953 black Chevrolet. Foster was taken to Hearne Hospital. Sheriff Carl Black investigates.

Funeral services for Mrs Viola Cawthorn of Rogers were conducted at 10 a.m. Tuesday in the Chapel of Skinner Funeral Home Rogers. Burial followed in Rogers Cemetery. She died in Temple Sunday at 12 45 p.m. Born February 4 1875 she was a Mississippi native and member of the First Christian Church since childhood. Survivors include sons Merle Cawthorn Houston Orville Cawthorn Port Lavaca Woodrow Cawthorn Houston a daughter Mrs Margee Knust Victoria and six grandchildren.

Thomas Marak 97 died at the La Grange Rest Home August 13 1954 after years of declining health. Born December 29 1856 at Hostyn near La Grange he was the oldest Czech born in Texas and helped found the Marak Community. Milam County is expected to be designated a drought disaster area within days. Roy Wright Milam County FHA Supervisor says farmers have already inquired and blanks will be available at Cameron FHA Office in the Henderson building within 48 hours. The 60 day program covers feed grains hay and maintains foundation herds for qualifying farmers.
