Lester Williams of the U S Navy visits Cameron with family after duty in San Diego California. Mrs. Williams and their son Richard remain in Cameron while he meets relatives and friends during the leave period. Formerly a cashier at Citizens National Bank, Williams is stationed on the West Coast.
The Milam Herald urges voters to elect Gordon Simpson of Tyler for Associate Justice of the Supreme Court and Jesse Martin of Fort Worth for Attorney General in the upcoming run off primary on August 26. The paper praises Simpson as a capable lawyer and veteran, and notes Martin’s Marine service and Senate role while urging trust in their qualifications.
A small Negro child was run down by hoodlums who sped away, maiming the victim for life. The incident follows a prior injury to Lieut. Wilson Mode. No charges have been filed and suspects are unknown. The district attorney promises pursuit and justice.
Pfc Raymond Williams entered service in May 1943 and trained in Maryland and North Carolina before overseas duty in December 1943 landing in England. A former projectionist for Swift Theatres and Howard Theatre, he graduated Yee High School class of 1920 and is son of C M Williams. He is hospitalized in England and hopes to return home soon. his wife and newborn son are in San Antonio.
Mrs Ed Maas from Rosebud visited Cameron on Thursday for a social call.
Funeral services for George Ivory 65 a Cameron resident and longtime Cameron Hospital nurse are set for Sunday at Bethel A M E Church with Rev J W Williams delivering the oration. Ivory died Tuesday August 8 1944 after two years of illness and is survived by a widow three children three grandchildren and a brother. Interment will be in the colored cemetery in Cameron.
After 17 months of active service in India and Burma PFC Clifton W Cryer is on his way home a telegram to his parents Mr and Mrs J A Cryer states He has landed safely in California The Cryer family also mentions son James Cryer serving in Michigan
D R Caldwell, third son of Mr. and Mrs W T Caldwell of North Camp Hood and former Cameron resident, chose the Navy in October 1943. His brother Lieut W T Caldwell AAF was killed in France in 1943 and another brother Pfe Dan M Caldwell serves in England. Caldwell trained at Lake City and Beaufort after leaving Yee High School in 1942 and married Melba Howard in Galveston on September 3, 1943.
Three German prisoners of war who fled Hearne internment camp four days earlier were captured late Sunday on the Brazos River near Bryan. They had stolen a large boat and towed a rubber boat, with plans to reach Argentina. Local and military efforts aided by an army flyer led to their detention near the Avalon Club, not far from the Brazos and Burleson county lines.

An FBI sponsored law enforcement officers conference is set for Tuesday August 22 1944 at 1 pm at the Milam Theatre Cameron. A reverse D I Q quiz on arrest search and seizure will feature District Attorney Ed Gunn Cameron City Attorney Roy Baskin and Mose G Cox answering from a panel with audience questions. Local officers from Burleson Lee Milam Robertson and Washington counties will attend. A fire area demonstration by Special Agent George W Carlson and Kennedy of the San Antonio field division and an educational film on Japanese aggression will be shown. Officer introductions will be led by Milam County Deputy Sheriff Carl Black.
August 15 1942 Tokyo conceded a Solomons setback. Albert Small of Bay Town returned to Cameron to spend several weeks with relatives and friends.
