Veteran Gerald Carlin Served With Sea Bees In World War II

Gerald Carlin enlisted in June 1942 and served in the Sea Bees first overseas at Guadalcanal. He helped build airfields, joined the 18th Regiment of the Second Marine Division, fought at Tarawa, Saipan, and Tinian, earning a Presidential Unit Citation. He later contracted malaria but survived all battles and returned to the United States for a 30 day furlough.

Breakfast Held for Departing Pastor and Wife

A breakfast for Rev. John C. Solomon and Mrs Solomon was given by the Ministers Association on Tuesday morning to honor their impending departure. Solomon, who has served as secretary and treasurer of the local Pastors Association, will accept a ministerial post in another state and soon leave the city.

Boehner Elected President of Cameron Rotary Club

J. M. Boehner was elected President by the Cameron Rotary Club board at noon Thursday. W. T. Hanes joined the board, while John C. Solomon resigned from the presidency creating a vacancy. Boehner plans a strong Rotary program for the club.

Aubrey Hightower Seen in Cameron Last Week

Aubrey Hightower of Walkers Creek was spotted in Cameron last week. The sighting places Hightower in the county town during a brief visit for undisclosed reasons.

Cameron first bale of 1945 cotton reported

The first bale of 1945 cotton weighing 500 pounds was ginned at 9 p.m. on Monday from S. R. Price's crop on the J. D. Turney land near Hanover. Robert Weems circulated the annual subscription list to raise the bonus for the bale. Another bale was expected in the city Tuesday. Crop timing is later than 1944 with ideal growing conditions except for early heavy rains. Dry weather boosts potential yield. Milam county acreage is the lowest in state history.

IAPS May Be Sending Out Surrender Orders

The Swiss Legation reported a coded document from Japan with no surrender terms. Prime Minister Atlee said no Tokyo surrender report reached London. A Japanese broadcaster claimed the surrender document is on the way, while images show Japanese mourners near the Imperial Palace. A high official said MacArthur will be the supreme commander to direct surrender terms.

Navy confirms James Ray Dodson listed as missing

Navy records keep James Ray Dodson Coxswain United States Navy listed as missing from the USS Grayback presumed lost. A July 7 1945 letter to his father J R Dodson Cameron notes possible prisoner of war status though government has released no position on the submarine.

May See Surrender On Missouri Battleship

Seaman Layne Harwell may witness Japan's surrender aboard the battleship Missouri. In Washington the House Naval Affairs chair suggested the ceremony be held on Missouri to honor President Truman's home state. Harwell, 10, is the son of J E Harwell of Cameron and is the only Milam county boy aboard Missouri.

Emperor Declines Friday Peace Envoy Meeting

On Wednesday Hirohito said Japan could not meet General Mac Arthur’s demand for peace envoys in Manila Friday. The emperor ordered a ceasefire as Allied forces press on. The Third Fleet reports 1300 Japanese planes destroyed in 72 hours. surrender plans await MacArthur. President Truman calls peacetime conference.

P H McKinney Jr aged 63 farmer and Milam County figure died August 2 1945 at his Jones Prairie home of a heart attack after recent illness. Atkinson Assigned as Line Mechanic with Red Raiders

Master Sergeant John A. Atkinson, son of Mr and Mrs W A Atkinson of Cameron Rt 2, Cameron, has been assigned as line mechanic with the Red Raiders, a leading B 24 unit of the Fifth Air Force Bomber Command in the Philippines. Three Local Men Held as Prisoners of War in Japan

Three Cameron area servicemen Capt. George Peets of Maysfield Sgt. Wm Galler of Buckholts and Walter B Eichenhorst Warrant Officer Cameron are among six captured in the fall of the Philippines. Two prisoners Pvt Merrit and Pfe Reyes are reported dead or lost at sea. Cpl Alfred Simecek, previously published, was liberated from Bilibid prison in Manila and is at Fort Sam Houston. Community notes include travel back from Arkansas and visitors in Cameron.

Sgt Clarence O Simank enlisted 1944 trained at Camp Robinson Ark served in Europe with General Hodges 1st Army entered Germany Oct 1944 awarded Purple Heart and Bronze Star for meritorious service under fire in Germany Feb 7 1945 and for leading a reconnaissance patrol. Ist. Sgt. Sebesta Arrives in States After European War Service

Ist. Sgt. Ernest J. Sebesta, 23 months in European Theatre as a 1st Sgt., arrived at Presque Isle Army Air Field aboard an Air Transport Command Snowball flight. He earned five battle stars plus Bronze Star and Silver Star and commented that ATC travel is the world’s best. He is the son of Mr and Mrs E J Sebesta of Cam. Snowball is the Army Air Transport service operating to Europe since July 1944. Also noted: Miss Nadine Glaser returned home from a two week Houston visit with her sister Mrs Edna Smith. Clarence Raney of Buckholts was in Cameron recently.

Obituary: Robert C. Conley of Cameron dies at 74

Robert C. Conley, 74, died at his Cameron home on Wednesday August 1 1945 after a short illness. Born April 27 1871 he married Alice Shirley in Cannon County Tennessee August 22 1889 and moved to Texas in 1906. He leaves a widow four sons J B Conley Cameron W J Conley Blanco H H Conley C P Naval Air Station San Diego and H L Conley Cameron. four daughters and a sister in Nashville. Interment Oak Hill Cemetery with Green Funeral Home in charge.
